According to Apple, iOS 18.3.1 (and iPadOS 18.3.1) focuses primarily on bug fixes and performance improvements. The update addresses a critical vulnerability in iOS's accessibility features that was actively exploited by attackers.
iOS 18.3.1 update is now available for compatible iPhone users
Specifically, an attacker could gain physical access to an iPhone or iPad and disable USB Restricted Mode on the locked device. USB Restricted Mode is a feature that requires a user to enter a password to allow connection to a computer or other device via USB. Bypassing this feature could allow an attacker to access personal data stored on the device.
Reasons to upgrade to iOS 18.3.1
Apple said it was aware of reports that the issue may have been exploited in a sophisticated attack against specific individuals. As such, the company said software updates are important to reduce the risk of attacks from hackers and other threats.
iPhone and iPad users are advised to check and update their operating system by going to Settings > General > Software Update to ensure device security.
Additionally, Apple has also released updates for macOS 15, visionOS 2, and watchOS 11, but details on security patches for those operating systems have not been released. For older devices, Apple has released iOS 17.7.5 with a fix for the same vulnerability.
