According to information from Chinese rumor expert Instant Digital, Apple is restarting Project Bongo – currently in the technical testing phase with the device identifier D84 and the project codename Veyron. "Apple has begun back-up development of the touch button scheme for the entire production line, including iPads and Apple Watches," Instant Digital revealed.
According to AppleInsider , Project Bongo was originally conceived as a hardware update for the iPhone 15 Pro, aiming to introduce haptic volume and power buttons to the iPhone. With the latest update, it seems Apple is looking to bring haptic feedback buttons to other devices including iPads and Apple Watches.
In fact, before the project was abruptly canceled in April 2023, Apple had planned to bring this change to the entire iPhone 16 lineup. Initially, the company wanted to integrate a unified volume button on Project Bongo, as well as a capacitive Action button and a Camera Control button. However, only the Camera Control button was included in the final product.
In terms of software, this prototype runs an InternalUI build of iOS 17. This suggests the device contains a specialized variant of iOS used internally by Apple engineers for development and testing purposes.
Previously, in October 2022, TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that Apple planned to switch the power and volume buttons from physical to force-sensitive on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, which were scheduled to launch in 2023.
Similar to the previous Home button, Kuo said Apple will use a Taptic Engine vibration mechanism, simulating the feel of pressing a button when a user applies pressure to the area containing the power and volume buttons, like the Home button on the iPhone SE 2022 or the Force Touch trackpad on a MacBook.
According to information previously revealed by Instant Digital, before Project Bongo was initially canceled, Apple faced issues with inaccurate touch recognition and problems related to the sensitivity of the haptic feedback button.
