According to Chinese rumor expert Instant Digital, Apple is restarting Project Bongo - which is in the technical testing phase with the device identifier D84 and the project codename Veyron. "Apple has started to start the touch button scheme for the entire production line, including iPad and Apple Watch," Instant Digital revealed.
According to AppleInsider , Project Bongo was originally conceived as a hardware update for the iPhone 15 Pro, with the aim of introducing haptic volume and power buttons to the iPhone. With the latest update, it seems that Apple is looking to bring haptic touch buttons (vibration feedback when touched) to other devices including the iPad and Apple Watch.
In fact, before the project was abruptly canceled in April 2023, Apple had planned to bring this change to the entire iPhone 16 line. Initially, the company wanted to integrate the unified volume button on Project Bongo as well as the capacitive Action button and Camera Control button. However, only the Camera Control button made it into the final product.
On the software side, this prototype runs the InternalUI build of iOS 17. This suggests that the device contains a specialized variant of iOS used internally by Apple engineers for development and testing purposes.
Previously, in October 2022, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities said Apple planned to switch the power and volume buttons from physical to force-touch on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max duo to be launched in 2023.
Similar to the previous Home button, Kuo said Apple will use a Taptic Engine vibration, simulating the feeling of pressing a button when the user applies force to the area containing the power and volume buttons like the Home button on the iPhone SE 2022 or the Force Touch trackpad on the MacBook.
According to information previously revealed by Instant Digital, before Project Bongo was first canceled, Apple faced issues with false touch recognition and issues related to the sensitivity of the haptic button.
