According to WSJ , Apple is entering the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), technology that can help paralyzed patients control computers or electronic devices using only brain waves, without movement.

Specifically, the source said that Apple is working on a new communication standard with Synchron, one of the pioneering companies in brain implantation (BCI) to help patients manipulate electronic devices.

Synchron will manufacture a stent-like device that is implanted in a vein above the motor cortex, called a Stentrode, with electrodes that read brain signals. Instead of having to manipulate a screen, the device will translate signals from the brain and help the person navigate.

This is seen as a major step towards allowing users to control their iPhones using neural signals captured by a new generation of brain implants. This could make Apple devices more accessible to tens of thousands of people who cannot use their hands due to severe spinal cord injuries or diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

In theory, a BCI is a system that decodes brain signals and translates them into commands for external technology. If the system works, patients with severe degenerative diseases like polio could text or browse social media with their minds.

Neuralink, the brain chip startup of billionaire Elon Musk, is currently one of the pioneers in this field, having successfully implanted a BCI in its third patient. The billionaire also revealed that the startup is planning to perform about 20-30 more implantations by 2025.
