Pepper price today May 17 in the world market
In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Community (IPC) has updated the prices of all types of pepper traded in the international market on May 16 (local time) as follows:
Indonesia's Lampung black pepper price increased slightly compared to yesterday at 7,301 USD/ton (up 0.67%). In addition, Muntok white pepper price also increased slightly compared to yesterday at 10,051 USD/ton (up 0.68%).
Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,800/mt.
Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,200/ton. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price remained stable from yesterday at $11,900/ton.
Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of 500 gr/l black pepper in Vietnam reached 6,700 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,800 USD/ton.
Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,700/ton.
Domestic pepper prices are recording continuous fluctuations, but still within a narrow range. Compared to previous flat sessions, the fluctuations are not large. According to experts, although pepper output this year is not abundant, the purchase price has not met expectations, making growers hesitant to sell.
However, pepper prices are now much higher than the same period last year. The Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that many businesses are entering the stage of completing delivery contracts for the second quarter of 2025.
This could provide a slight boost to prices in mid-May to early June. In addition, strong demand from Europe and the Middle East during the festive and tourist season also contributed to supporting the market.
In the first four months of the year, Vietnam imported more than 8,100 tons of pepper from Brazil, an increase of more than 33%. Imports from Indonesia increased sharply by nearly 208%, reaching more than 4,200 tons. In contrast, imports from Cambodia decreased by nearly half compared to the same period, to only more than 1,900 tons.
Some people say that it is quite surprising that Vietnam, the world's leading pepper exporter, still imports large quantities of pepper from other countries. However, this is a normal activity in production and business according to market mechanisms. Most of the imported pepper is used for processing and re-export, helping the pepper industry maintain its leading position in the world.
