According to a VNA correspondent at the UN, UN General Assembly President Csaba Kőrösi stressed that the world is witnessing more and more serious, complex and difficult-to-resolve armed conflicts, affecting the progress of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 in many countries and regions. This situation poses an urgent requirement for UN mechanisms, especially the Security Council, the UN Peacebuilding Commission and member states to strengthen cooperation to find solutions to prevent new conflicts, effectively resolve existing conflicts and maintain peace and sustainable development in the post-conflict period.
Speaking on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the meeting, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, stated that the nature of current conflicts has changed and become more unpredictable, posing greater challenges to peace-building and peacekeeping efforts. The Ambassador stressed that ASEAN hopes that the international community will make more efforts and multilateral commitments to resolve conflicts through a comprehensive and closely coordinated approach, including the need to strengthen the role of regional organizations in ensuring peace and stability.
Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang reaffirmed ASEAN’s firm commitment to the UN’s peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts, and its readiness to enhance engagement and cooperation with dialogue partners and external partners, including through existing ASEAN-led mechanisms, to promote peace, security, stability and development, while enhancing the region’s resilience to emerging challenges. The ASEAN representative called on relevant parties to make joint efforts to address resource challenges for peacebuilding; encourage the full, equitable and meaningful participation of women at all levels of the peace process.
The Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) was established by UN General Assembly resolutions A/RES/60/180 and UNSC resolutions S/RES/1645 in 2005, with the function of advising the UN on building and maintaining sustainable peace in conflict-affected countries. The PBC consists of 31 member states, of which 21 members are elected by the General Assembly, the UNSC and the Economic and Social Council; 5 members are the leading financial contributors and 5 other members are the largest troop contributors to UN peacekeeping forces.
