After returning from a crushing 5-0 defeat to PSG in the 2024/25 Champions League final, coach Simone Inzaghi sat down with Inter's board of directors to decide his future. Instead of taking place at the club's headquarters, the meeting was held at another location in the center of Milan on Tuesday afternoon.

Nerazzurri chiefs have praised Inzaghi's four years in charge and hope he will continue to lead the team. Ahead of the final in Munich, the 49-year-old coach said he was "very happy to be leading Inter and has everything I need here".

However, the defeat by the biggest margin in the history of the Champions League final was a heavy blow to Inzaghi's enthusiasm. As shared in the press room, he said this was a "painful defeat", and at the same time "did not know how to answer" when asked whether he would participate with Inter in the FIFA Club World Cup or not.

At a meeting on Tuesday afternoon, Inzaghi announced his resignation, ending his four-year tenure at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. Despite a tight budget, he still helped the Nerazzurri win one Serie A title, two Coppa Italias, three Italian Super Cups and reach two Champions League finals in three years.

La Gazzetta dello Sport also reported that Inzaghi has agreed to become Al-Hilal's coach in the Saudi Pro League with a salary of 26 million euros/season. He will soon travel to Saudi Arabia to take over the team, in preparation for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which starts on June 14. The most successful team in Asia with 70 major and minor titles, including a record 19 championships, will play their opening match against Real Madrid on June 18.

After losing the 2024/25 title to Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal are on a recruitment spree. They have already made an offer for Bruno Fernandes (which was recently rejected) and are also in talks with Atalanta midfielder Ederson. Al-Hilal are also willing to pay €30 million plus add-ons for Theo Hernandez, who is being offered a salary of €20 million per season.

On Inter's side, Cesc Fabregas, Roberto De Zerbi, Christian Chivu and Patrick Vieira are potential candidates for the coaching position just left behind by Inzaghi.
