In particular, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the leading cause of liver dysfunction worldwide and is a rapidly growing health problem.

A recent landmark study published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Nutrition has reinforced the important role of diet in liver health, according to health news site Medindia .

The large-scale study, which analysed data from more than 121,000 participants from the UK Biobank, found those who ate an inflammatory diet – high in processed foods, sugar and unhealthy fats – had a 16% higher risk of developing chronic liver disease.

Conversely, research shows that people who adopt anti-inflammatory diets like the Mediterranean diet, which scores highly on the healthy eating index, have a significantly reduced risk of liver disease.

Dr Sanjiv Saigal, President of the Indian Liver Transplant Society, stressed: About 50% of liver diseases can be prevented by adopting a liver disease prevention diet that supports liver regeneration.

Liver damage caused by poor dietary choices, alcohol, processed foods and sedentary lifestyles can be reversed if we take action today.

Diet to prevent liver disease, support liver regeneration

The liver has an amazing ability to heal itself, and even years of damage can be reversed with the right lifestyle changes, explains Dr. Saigal.

He points out that a diet that not only prevents liver disease but also supports liver regeneration includes many:

  • Fruits and vegetables.
  • Whole grains and legumes.
  • Lean proteins like fish and beans.
  • Reduce your intake of sugar, refined carbohydrates and saturated fats, according to Medindia.

Adding to the concern, research in the scientific journal Nutrients , found that consuming too much fructose, commonly found in sugary drinks and processed snacks, leads to fat accumulation in the liver and insulin resistance.

Dr. Saigal said that even liver patients who switched to a healthier diet had stable liver enzyme levels, restored energy, and improved long-term outcomes.

By choosing fresh produce, cooking at home, drinking enough water and eating mindfully, we can prevent liver disease, says Dr. Saigal. Sugary drinks, snacks and fast food are contributing to liver damage.

In addition, avoiding drug abuse, cutting down on alcohol, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep also help prevent liver damage. With early changes in lifestyle, liver damage can not only be prevented but also reversed.
