From "newbie" to popular airline
According to the agreement signed on May 16, Thai Vietjet, a joint venture between Vietjet Vietnam and its Thai partner, will receive 50 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in the near future. This is part of the contract to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft that Vietjet previously signed with the largest aircraft manufacturer in the United States.
The first batch of aircraft is expected to be delivered in October 2025, helping Thai Vietjet significantly increase its operating capacity and expand its scale of operations, especially on routes between Vietnam, Thailand and countries in the Asia- Pacific region.
Speaking at the event, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao - Chairwoman of Vietjet Group - said that the transfer of 50 modern and efficient Boeing 737-8 aircraft to Vietjet Thailand is Vietjet's long-term commitment to the sustainable development of the regional aviation industry.
"We will take action to implement the 'Three Connections' strategy between the two countries - including connecting supply chains, businesses and localities," said Ms. Thao.
Thai Vietjet was established in 2014. After more than a decade of operation, the airline has gradually affirmed its position in Thailand.
Thai Vietjet is currently headquartered at Suvarnabhumi International Airport (Bangkok) and operates 33 domestic and international routes, connecting major cities in Thailand with destinations in Vietnam, Japan, China, India, Cambodia and many other countries.
According to data from Planespotters, as of May 2025, Thai Vietjet's fleet will consist of 18 aircraft, including 12 Airbus A320s and 6 Airbus A321s. Therefore, with the upcoming delivery of 50 more Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, Thai Vietjet's fleet will enter its fastest growth period ever.
This not only helps the airline improve its competitiveness, but also saves operating costs, expands its long-distance flight capabilities and increases flight frequency on important international routes.
Reaching large market share in Thailand
According to data from the Thai aviation industry, by 2024, Thai Vietjet will account for about 14.2% of the domestic market share, ranking 3rd after Thai AirAsia at 36.9% and Nok Air at 14.6%, but has surpassed veteran names such as Bangkok Airways or Thai Lion Air.
Thai Vietjet's strong growth shows the appeal of its efficient low-cost flight model, combined with a flexible flight network strategy and support from Vietjet Vietnam.
Regarding ownership structure, Thai Vietjet is a joint venture between Thai partners and Vietjet, in which Thai Vietjet Aviation Co. Ltd holds 52%; International Investment Co. Ltd owns 39%; Vietjet Vietnam contributes 9%.
Not only stopping in Thailand, Vietjet, the largest private airline in Vietnam, continues to expand the international market when officially launching Vietjet Qazaqstan, a new generation airline in Kazakhstan in early May 2025.
According to the plan, Vietjet Qazaqstan will operate at least 20 Boeing 737 aircraft.
The airline was established between Vietjet and Qazaq Air - Kazakhstan's state airline.
Under the agreement, Vietjet will purchase a strategic stake in Qazaq Air and jointly develop and operate the new airline under the name Vietjet Qazaqstan.
