DNVN - On July 31, Backbase - a technology company providing interactive banking platforms announced the establishment of the first global Center of Excellence (COE) focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) in Ho Chi Minh City.
Located in District 1, the center has a dedicated floor for AI development. The center brings together a talented team of engineers specializing in web, mobile, backend, AI, machine learning, and large language models (LLM), promoting continuous development and innovation in the field of AI.
The center will serve as Backbase's global hub for AI banking solutions and will be led by Chris Shayan, Backbase's Head of AI and former Head of Customer Experience at Techcombank and HDBank.
Backbase’s strategic decision to establish this COE in Vietnam underscores the company’s commitment to the Asia region. Vietnam is considered the fastest growing digital economy in Southeast Asia and is recognized for its rapid digital transformation, innovation, and abundant talent.

Asia is also an important region for Backbase and Vietnam has become one of the fastest growing markets in Asia, with many banks such as Techcombank, TPBank, ABBANK and OCB driving digital transformation through the Backbase interactive banking platform.
Prior to joining Backbase, Mr. Shayan served as Chief Technology Officer at Techcombank, leading digital transformation initiatives. Additionally, as Chief Digital Officer at HD Bank, he led the digital transformation process that resulted in a 4x increase in customer base.
“The Center will leverage AI to enhance the value customers can get from the Backbase Interactive Banking Platform by enhancing customer usage, service experience, and providing access to analytics for informed decision making,” said Shayan. “The Center of Excellence aims to vertically integrate AI to enhance customer lifetime value, while accelerating the development and deployment of products that give banks early access to AI-based capabilities.”
A McKinsey Global Institute forecast suggests that generative AI has the potential to create up to $340 billion in value for banks, while AI is still in its early stages of development in the region. The Center of Excellence will prioritize practical AI applications that improve business outcomes, rather than focusing solely on research and development efforts. The goal is to create AI capabilities that increase customer lifetime value and customer engagement, and integrate these solutions seamlessly into Backbase’s existing software architecture.
