What does the survey include?

The survey consists of two parts.

For many years, the Department of Education and Training has stipulated that the conditions for admission to the 6th grade at Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School are that students must have achieved a score of 9 or higher in each of the 5th grade's end-of-year periodic tests in Vietnamese and Mathematics. In addition, students must complete a competency assessment test (90 minutes).

Accordingly, the Grade 6 survey at Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School consists of two parts: multiple-choice and essay questions. The survey content covers English and Vietnamese language skills - essay writing; mathematics and logical thinking; natural sciences; social sciences: history - geography; and general knowledge.

The test section consists of 20 questions in English, to be completed within 30 minutes. The content covers knowledge of natural sciences, social sciences, and general life skills.

In the essay section, candidates have 60 minutes to complete the test. The content includes an assessment of English proficiency in listening, reading, and writing skills; an assessment of mathematical ability and logical thinking; and an assessment of reading comprehension and essay writing skills (this section is written in Vietnamese).

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, if students are not admitted to the 6th grade at Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School, they can still be considered for admission to 6th grade in other districts and counties.

The odds of winning are usually around 1 in 8.

For many years, with an annual enrollment target of around 500 students, approximately 4,000 students have registered for the entrance exam. On average, the competition ratio for 6th grade at Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School is usually around 1/8, and parents consider it higher than the competition ratio for universities today.

According to a primary school teacher in District 1 who has observed the Grade 6 exam questions at Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted for many years, from 2022 onwards, the math problems were almost entirely motion-related. However, the 2023 exam included geometry. This teacher stated that this was a positive aspect of the exam. Specifically, the questions required students to draw diagrams, helping them demonstrate their drawing skills and geometric thinking methods from the primary school level. This is a weakness that most secondary school students are currently facing. The exam's inclusion of geometry helps build a foundation for learning in subsequent grades.
