Seeing that many households raising spotted deer brought high profits, Nguyen Van Binh (Tan Lap commune, Kon Ray district, Kon Tum province) sold his house and family land to invest. Up to now, the model of raising specialty animals has been operating stably, each year Mr. Binh earns about 300 million VND in profit.
In 2021, during a visit to a deer farming model of his friends in Ha Tinh , Mr. Nguyen Van Binh realized the great potential of this wild animal. No sooner said than done, he decided to sell his family's land to buy 25 deer for over 500 million VND and build a barn for 400 million VND.
Mr. Nguyen Van Binh's deer farming model brings in an income of about 300 million VND/year.
Mr. Binh shared: "In the beginning, my family faced many difficulties because of the large investment capital and the lack of stable market output. I only focused on selling deer antlers to close customers, but for medical facilities that require large quantities, my family could not meet the demand. However, fortunately, deer are animals with good resistance, are omnivorous, easy to raise and rarely get sick."
According to Mr. Binh, deer are domesticated wild animals, so they have wild habits. It is necessary to build barns in dry, clean and airy places. In addition, care techniques must be done properly, and adequate feeding will help deer grow and develop well, producing quality antlers.
"Deer are omnivores, so they can easily find food from leaves, grass, fruits, and banana stems. Compared to goats, deer are easier to eat and less picky. The main food of deer is elephant grass. Because the food source can be taken advantage of from the family, the cost is low," said Mr. Binh.
Female deer start reproducing after 2 years old, about 1 litter per year; a pair of breeding deer over 6 months old costs over 40 million VND.
One of the biggest challenges in raising deer is building sturdy, solid barns. If deer are released into the wild, it is very difficult to catch them. Therefore, farmers must always be careful, pay attention to barn locks and build high fences.
According to Mr. Binh, a male deer raised for 9-10 months will start to produce velvet, each harvest will yield about 1kg of velvet, the average price is from 18 million to 20 million VND/kg. Thanks to good care, it only took 6 months for Mr. Binh's deer herd to give birth to their first litter. He started to market and sold more than 300 million VND worth of deer breeds. At the same time, he also sold nearly 200 million VND worth of deer antlers. After more than 1 year, Mr. Binh had recovered his capital. Along with that, Mr. Binh continued to expand the model to increase his income.
Thanks to the good application of knowledge and techniques, Mr. Binh's family now has about 40 deer, earning about 300 million VND/year. From searching for the market, Mr. Binh's deer antlers have now affirmed their quality and many customers have placed deposits in advance.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tan Lap Commune, the model of raising spotted deer has developed stably, bringing high income and creating a new direction for farmers in the area. Over the years, the Farmers' Association of the Commune has always accompanied Mr. Binh's family to try to find and connect market outlets so that the model of raising spotted deer can develop further.
At the same time, Mr. Binh is always ready to help, support, and share experiences with households wishing to develop the deer farming model. Up to now, there are 4 households in the area that have maintained this model and improved the local economy.
