Victory News April 24, 1975: Our army surrounded Saigon from all directions

According to the summary report dated April 24, 1975 of the Central Intelligence Office - the Presidential Office of the Saigon government on the activities of the Liberation Army in South Vietnam, printed in the book "On the Great Spring Victory of 1975 through documents of the Saigon government", as of 6:00 a.m. on April 24, the war situation in South Vietnam continued to be fierce.

In Long An , we attacked a sub-region in Rach Kien district and 6 outposts in Ben Luc, Rach Kien and Can Giuoc districts, causing the sub-region in Rach Kien district and 4 outposts to lose contact.

In Military Region 4, we attacked 9 enemy positions in Kien Phong, Dinh Tuong, Go Cong and An Xuyen, causing a position north of Hong Ngu district (Kien Phong) to lose contact. In addition, we continued to shell Bien Hoa airport at a high level.

On April 24, many Western embassies in Saigon were closed. International airlines at Tan Son Nhat airport stopped operating.

Faced with the unfavorable situation, the US proposed that we cease fire and negotiate. The puppet President Tran Van Huong sent a representative to meet with the military delegation of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam to carry out the above intention.

The Politburo assessed: This is a new plot of the US to find a way to delay our attack on Saigon, establish a new Government, hoping to reach a political solution, and save the situation.

Also on April 24, comrade Le Duc Tho sent a telegram to the Politburo reporting on the situation between us and the enemy after the Xuan Loc campaign, with the following content: Our 10 divisions had just entered the battlefield. Although we encountered some difficulties, the front's determination was to fight and replenish, trying our best to ensure the minimum conditions to open the campaign.

We are urgently preparing for the plan to attack and revolt. It is expected that in the worst case scenario, such as the enemy destroying the bridge, our army has a plan to repair the bridge or fight without tanks and artillery.

Up to this point, our army had surrounded Saigon - Gia Dinh city from all directions, about 50km from the center of Saigon, occupied the starting position of the attack and secretly brought a part of the force to approach the target. Our army and people had completed the concentration of forces and means of war to create a battle with overwhelming strength, ensuring victory.

On April 24, the Regional Command instructed Military Region 9 to step up coordination with the troops attacking Saigon, hold back enemy troops, carry out a general offensive and uprising, overthrow the puppet army and government, liberate localities, and completely liberate the South.

Accordingly, the Regional Party Committee - Military Region 9 Command launched a strong offensive movement with the spirit of province liberating province, district liberating district, commune liberating commune; armed forces approached provincial towns to attack military sub-regions and provincial administrative buildings as planned.

In the Northern rear, the people were excited and enthusiastic towards the South. In the first 4 months of 1975, the Northern rear provided the front line with more than 110,000 cadres and soldiers; 230,000 tons of various materials.

From the North, the Party and Government also sent tens of thousands of civil and political party cadres to the newly liberated areas to strengthen the Party Committees and local governments, and stabilize people's lives in the newly liberated areas.
