The new law bans the sale, transfer, distribution, manufacture and import of 62 gun models classified as “assault weapons,” including AR-15s, AK-47s and similar high-powered rifles that have been used in mass shootings across the United States.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Governor Inslee emphasized that these weapons of war and assault weapons are weapons that lead to mass massacres in a short period of time.

At the ceremony, Governor Inslee also signed into law two other major gun-related measures, including a 10-day waiting period limit for gun purchases and a bill that would hold gun manufacturers liable for negligent gun sales.

According to The Seattle Times, the three bills were passed by the legislature with a majority of votes, mostly from Democrats.

Washington becomes the 10th state in the US to ban AR-15s and similar weapons, including California, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey, according to the Giffords Law Center.

According to statistics from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), which tracks shootings in the US, since the beginning of this year, the country has recorded more than 11,650 deaths in gun-related incidents.

Previously, GVA said that in all of 2022, 20,249 people died in shootings, gun accidents or using guns for self-defense. More than 24,000 cases of suicide by gun.
