Recently, at the 50th National Parasitology Conference, MSc. Dr. Tran Huu Dat - MEDLATEC Testing Center, representative of MEDLATEC Healthcare System presented a research topic on the infection rate, species composition and sensitivity to antifungal drugs of Candida in the genitourinary tract with updated information and valuable data applied in clinical practice.
On the journey of nearly 30 years of carrying out the mission for community health, MEDLATEC considers professional quality as an important foundation to create quality medical examination and treatment to serve the people. In addition to internal training activities that take place regularly and continuously, MEDLATEC also focuses on scientific research, actively participating in prestigious professional seminars at home and abroad.
The 50th National Parasitology Conference was held on April 4-5 at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue University. This is an annual forum where scientists and doctors meet and exchange results and achievements in research and teaching on Parasitology in the current period. This is also an opportunity for scientists to share and cooperate to develop new research ideas, specialized in the field or interdisciplinary.
Attending the conference, MSc. Dr. Tran Huu Dat - Department of Microbiology, MEDLATEC Testing Center reported "Determining the infection rate, species composition and sensitivity to antifungal drugs of Candida genitourinary tract of patients tested at MEDLATEC", with the attention and high appreciation of many delegates attending.
MSc. Dr. Tran Huu Dat - Microbiology Department, MEDLATEC Testing Center presented a report at the conference.
At the beginning of the presentation, the reporter said that Candida (full name is Candida albicans) is a common fungus that exists everywhere around us. When entering the human body, Candida often lives and causes diseases in the skin, oral cavity, digestive system and especially the genitals. In particular, genitourinary tract infections caused by Candida are very common. The level of sensitivity to antifungal drugs varies between Candida species, but data in Vietnam is very limited.
Candida fungus exists everywhere around us.
In order to contribute more information about Candida infection, MSc. Dat conducted a study to determine the infection rate, species composition and sensitivity to antifungal drugs of Candida causing urogenital inflammation.
The study was conducted on 408 patients with genitourinary tract infections at MEDLATEC Healthcare System from January to December 2023. Fungal infections were identified by fresh microscopy and cultured using Sabouraud medium. Positive strains were identified by species and antifungal sensitivity using automated Vitek systems.
The results of the study were announced by the reporter at the conference as follows:
- The rate of genitourinary candidiasis was 26.78%.
- Seven species of Candida fungi were identified, of which C. albicans accounted for 74.07%, the remaining 25.93% were C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. nivariensis and Candida sp.
- The rates of Candida sensitivity to antibiotics such as caspofungin, micafungin, fluconazole and voriconazole were 95.5%, 100%, 88.8% and 75.0%, respectively.
From the above results, Master Dat concluded that the rate of genitourinary tract infections caused by Candida fungus in patients tested at MEDLATEC Vietnam is quite high. The main pathogenic species is C. albicans. Some Candida strains were found to be resistant to fluconazole and voriconazole.
Also here, Master Dat presented specific clinical cases during the examination and treatment process as well as recommended treatment and consultation for patients, providing additional valuable knowledge in practical application.
Hopefully, the research results of Master, Doctor Tran Huu Dat will contribute to equipping doctors attending the conference with updated professional knowledge, contributing to improving the quality of parasitic disease diagnosis in particular and public health care in general.
Candida is the leading cause of diseases of the genital tract and many other parts. If not treated promptly, Candida can spread and cause serious health effects. Treating Candida infection can be easier and faster if detected early and treated properly. If you suspect you have a Candida infection, go to a reputable medical facility immediately for timely diagnosis and treatment. Your doctor will assess your symptoms and conduct tests to identify the bacteria causing the infection, thereby providing effective treatment.
