Previously, Malaysia's New Straits Times newspaper gave unfavorable statistics for the Malaysian team in matches against the Vietnamese team from 2014 until now.
New Straits Times wrote: “In the past 10 years, the Malaysian team has never won against the Vietnamese team in any official tournament. In the last 8 meetings between the two teams, the Vietnamese team won 7 matches and drew 1 match.”

“The last time the Malaysian team defeated the Vietnamese team was in the second leg of the AFF Cup 2014 semi-finals. At that time, the brilliance of veteran striker Talaha helped Malaysia win 4-2 at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi ,” the New Straits Times added.
In another article in the New Straits Times, the newspaper commented: “Recently, the Malaysian team announced five more naturalized players born abroad, including Rodrigo Holgado (Argentinian origin), Imanol Machuca (Argentina), Facundo Garces (Argentina), Jon Irazabal (Spain) and Joao Figueiredo (Brazil).”
“When they face Vietnam on Tuesday night, the naturalised players from all over the world will be on the same page. They will show team spirit, get used to each other’s style.
As for Malaysian fans, they only like to speak one language, the language of victory,” are the same lines written in Malaysia's leading English daily.

The Star newspaper of Malaysia said: “The match with the Vietnamese team in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers is not simply a football match. This is a moment to honor Malaysia’s naturalized players.”
“Harimau Malaya wants to get closer to the 2027 Asian Cup finals. The recent difficult matches of the Malaysian team against the Vietnamese team, and the fact that the Malaysian team could not win against this opponent, are motivation for the naturalized players of Malaysia, not a burden,” The Star affirmed.
The Star did not forget to quote naturalized player Hector Hevel (of Dutch origin, currently playing in Portugal): "I know it's been a long time since we've won against the Vietnamese team, that's motivation for us in the next match."
“The Vietnamese team is a good team, but so is Malaysia. We know our strengths, we have also researched the Vietnamese team. The coming time is the time for us to put these studies into practice,” Hector Hevel confidently added.
