In the early morning of October 30, chess player Magnus Carlsen once again asserted his dominance at the Champions Showdown: Clutch Chess Super Cup. He not only won the championship two rounds early but also created a huge score gap compared to the rest.
Entering the decisive day, Carlsen showed a devastating performance. He won the first four games in a row, including two successful defeats of Chess King Gukesh and two defeats of player Fabiano Caruana.
This crucial sprint officially helped the Norwegian player win the title early, two games ahead of the finals. After that, Carlsen quickly drew with Hikaru Nakamura in the remaining two games.
At the end of the tournament, Carlsen achieved a total of 25.5 points. He was the only player in the tournament with a positive record (+7), with 10 wins, 5 draws and only 3 losses.
The former Chess King's dominance was also shown through a series of 6 consecutive wins (lasting from the end of day 2 to the beginning of day 3) and an impressive head-to-head record with Chess King Gukesh, when he won 5 and drew 1 after 6 meetings.
Meanwhile, the remaining three strong opponents all had negative records (more games lost than won). Fabiano Caruana finished in 2nd place with 16.5 points (6 wins, 5 draws, 7 losses). Finishing in 3rd place was “God of Lightning” Hikaru Nakamura, he had 14 points (4 wins, 8 draws, 6 losses). The last place in the tournament was Chess King Gukesh Dommaraju with 10 points (3 wins, 8 draws, 7 losses).
This championship after only 3 days of rapid chess competition brought Magnus Carlsen a prize of up to 170,000 USD.
Notably, Carlsen's prize ($170,000) was even higher than Gukesh's Candidates' Prize ($120,000). Even runner-up Caruana pocketed $102,000, while Nakamura received $77,000 and Gukesh, the last-placed Chess Champion, received $63,000.
The Champions Showdown: Clutch Chess Super Cup tournament brings together four top players including Carlsen, Caruana, Nakamura and King Gukesh. The special feature of the "Clutch Chess" format is that the score increases day by day (1 point/win on day 1, 2 points on day 2 and 3 points on day 3), making the final day extremely dramatic.
Candidates is the tournament to choose the challenger to the Chess King title - and the one who won to become the Chess King was Gukesh.
