In the early hours of October 30th, chess player Magnus Carlsen once again asserted his dominance at the Champions Showdown: Clutch Chess Super Cup. He not only won the tournament two rounds early but also created a huge points lead over the rest of the competitors.
Entering the decisive day of competition, Carlsen displayed a devastating performance. He won the first four games in a row, including two successful defeats of World Champion Gukesh and two victories over Fabiano Caruana.
With this crucial sprint, the Norwegian player officially secured the title early, with two games remaining. Carlsen then deliberately drew quickly with Hikaru Nakamura in the remaining two games.
At the end of the tournament, Carlsen achieved a total of 25.5 points. He was the only player in the tournament with a positive score (+7), with 10 wins, 5 draws, and only 3 losses.
The former World Champion's dominance was further demonstrated by his streak of 6 consecutive wins (spanning from the end of day 2 to the beginning of day 3) and his impressive head-to-head record against World Champion Gukesh, with 5 wins and 1 draw in 6 encounters.
Meanwhile, all three remaining strong contenders had negative records (more losses than wins). Fabiano Caruana finished in second place with 16.5 points (6 wins, 5 draws, 7 losses). In third place was "Lightning God" Hikaru Nakamura with 14 points (4 wins, 8 draws, 6 losses). Finishing last in the tournament was World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju with 10 points (3 wins, 8 draws, 7 losses).
Winning this rapid chess championship after just three days of competition earned Magnus Carlsen a prize of $170,000.
Notably, Carlsen's prize money ($170,000) was even higher than Gukesh's Candidates prize ($120,000). Even runner-up Caruana pocketed $102,000, while Nakamura received $77,000 and World Champion Gukesh finished last with $63,000.
The Champions Showdown: Clutch Chess tournament brings together four top players: Carlsen, Caruana, Nakamura, and World Champion Gukesh. A unique feature of the "Clutch Chess" format is that points increase progressively each day (1 point per win on day 1, 2 points on day 2, and 3 points on day 3), making the final day of competition incredibly dramatic.
The Candidates tournament selects the challenger for the World Chess Championship – and the winner who became World Chess Champion was Gurush.
