The Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll was conducted by J. Ann Selzer, an American political pollster and president of the Des Moines (Iowa)-based Selzer & Company polling firm. According to the survey results, Democratic candidate and US Vice President Kamala Harris is the most popular presidential candidate in Iowa, leading Republican candidate and former US President Donald Trump by 47% to 44%. Although the difference between the two sides is within the survey's 3.4% margin of error, this is still a big leap for Ms. Harris. Stephen Gruber-Miller, a reporter covering the US Congress for the Des Moines Register, said Ms. Selzer and her polling firm called and interviewed voters who have voted or who are certain they will vote. The results show that independent women and women 65 and older are the leading groups supporting Ms. Harris. According to Gruber-Miller, the survey results are surprising because Mr. Trump won Iowa in 2016 and 2020 by 8 percentage points and has always led in the Mediacom Iowa Poll survey until this survey.
Gruber-Miller added that if you look at the past 20 years of US presidential elections and the Iowa Poll, the Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll has a reputation for accuracy and the survey results show that the race in Iowa may be closer than previously predicted. According to political analyst Megan Goldberg, Iowa has been considered a red state (leaning Republican) after the last few presidential elections and the midterm elections, but if you look at the broader historical picture, Iowa is one of the most volatile states in the US. The Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll survey results have a very accurate history, but the pollsters clearly did not talk to every voter, measuring only about 800 to 900 people. This means the polls are biased, but it could still inspire more people to vote on November 5, and people won't see the true accuracy of the polls until November 6. Political analyst Megan Goldberg stressed that ultimately, what matters is not who wins or loses in these polls, but who wins or loses on Election Day at the ballot box.
