The new Senate will consist of 200 members from 20 different professional and technical fields such as law, agriculture , media, education, etc. The new Senate will not be elected directly by the public but by candidates elected by each other.
Candidates will vote in three phases, starting with approved candidate groups in each profession and then inter-groups at the district level on June 9. Those who pass the district-level election will continue to the inter-group vote at the provincial level on June 16, followed by the final round of voting at the national level on June 26. The election results will be announced on July 2.
Speaking on May 25, Mr. Sawaeng Boonmee - Secretary General of the ECT - admitted that the number of candidates applying to run for the new Thai Senate election was lower than expected due to the high level of expertise required, as well as the complexity of the electoral system to prevent irregularities in the registration process. However, Mr. Sawaeng said that the current number of applicants will allow the ECT to manage and control the election process.
The ECT Secretary General also said that the list of Senate candidates is now available through the Smart Vote mobile application and people can report irregularities through the application.
