On November 2nd, Da Nang Hospital announced that doctors in the Stroke Department had successfully saved a 10-year-old boy who suffered a stroke using thrombolytic drugs.
Previously, patient NNH (10 years old, residing in Thanh Khe District, Da Nang City) was admitted to the emergency room at Da Nang Hospital in a lethargic state, with paralysis of the right side of the body, and unable to speak. Family members reported that while playing with the child, she complained of a headache, after which her mouth became distorted, she became lethargic, and had difficulty speaking…
At the emergency room of Da Nang Hospital, doctors performed a CT scan and then held an urgent consultation with doctors from the Stroke Department. This was a very rare case of childhood stroke. The patient was admitted with weakness on the right side of the body, progressing to complete paralysis and altered consciousness.
Fortunately, the family was able to take H. to Da Nang Hospital in time during the critical window. Doctors held an urgent consultation with leading stroke specialists in Ho Chi Minh City that same night to make an accurate diagnosis and decided to treat the child with thrombolytic drugs in the hope of saving her life.
The doctor checked NNH's motor function before discharge from the hospital.
According to MSc-Dr. Pham Nhu Thong, Deputy Head of the Stroke Department, a case of such a young patient suffering a stroke has never been seen at Da Nang Hospital. Treatment will be very difficult and risky because there may be additional complications, leaving sequelae that affect the future.
Fortunately, the child responded well to treatment, gradually improving after a course of medication and intensive rehabilitation exercises. Currently, the patient has been discharged from the hospital and returned to school after nearly a month of hospitalization.
Stroke can occur at any age.
Dr. Pham Nhu Thong added that, through the case of NH's stroke, it can be seen that strokes can occur at any age. If it occurs in young people or children, the consequences can be very severe due to both physical and mental sequelae for the patient.
For pediatric patients with cardiovascular abnormalities or blood clotting disorders, which are potential causes of stroke, more attention should be paid.
According to Dr. Thong, for stroke victims, the "golden time" determines both the patient's survival and recovery. Therefore, family members need to be aware of the signs of stroke (BE FAST) to recognize them early and provide timely emergency care.
Specifically, BE FAST includes B (BALANCE): loss of balance, headache, dizziness; E (EYESIGHT): partial or complete vision loss, sudden blurred vision; F (FACE): sudden facial asymmetry, one-sided smile, deviated philtrum; A (ARM): weakness in one arm or leg, difficulty gripping objects; S (SPEECH): loss of speech, sudden difficulty speaking, slurred speech; T (TIME): when the above symptoms appear suddenly, quickly call 115 or take the patient to the nearest medical facility for timely emergency treatment for stroke.
