At the 1st Dong Nai Province Patriotic Emulation Congress, period 2025-2030, which just took place, Ms. Thi Khui was one of the typical examples of the province honored at the congress.
Finding a new direction for cashew trees
Meeting us, while hoeing the grass growing around the newly planted cashew trees, Mr. Dieu Krah (in village 5, Tho Son commune) shared: Now doing organic farming is like that, hoeing wherever the grass grows, definitely not using chemical fertilizers. Doing so is tiring but very good for the soil and getting quality cashew nuts according to the regulations of the cooperative, from there bringing products abroad, people are very happy.
Mr. Dieu Krah's sentiments are also shared by nearly 200 members of the Trang Co Bu Lach Organic Cashew Cooperative. Since joining the Cooperative, cashew farmers in the area near Trang Co Bu Lach in particular and farmers in Tho Son commune in general have gradually become familiar with the concept of "organic agriculture". Instead of spraying pesticides and herbicides as before, today, they take care of cashew trees very meticulously, from weeding to choosing suitable organic fertilizers. In addition, on the same land area, they will prune and branch the cashew trees, and at the same time intercrop with fern or coffee trees underneath to increase family income. Mr. Dieu Se (member of Trang Co Bu Lach Organic Cashew Cooperative) said: Doing organic cashews not only has a higher selling price but also protects the land and the environment, contributing to improving people's health. Many people here have now switched to organic farming.
Ms. Thi Khui is 40 years old this year. Since childhood, she has been attached to the land of village 5, Tho Son commune - where the famous Bu Lach grassland is located and most households grow cashews. Like many other M'nong ethnic people, her family also grows cashews to have a stable source of income to cover their lives. However, when faced with the situation of cashew crop failure and price loss due to many reasons, she boldly stood up to mobilize people to change the form of cultivation, find a new and unique direction for cashew trees. Said and done, in 2017, Ms. Thi Khui established the Organic Cashew Growing Cooperative. After 5 years of operation, by 2022, the cooperative was "upgraded" to the Bu Lach grassland organic cashew cooperative with nearly 200 members. The motto of the cooperative is to do clean agriculture, bring clean cashew products to people.
consumption
“From a few dozen households at the beginning, the cooperative now has hundreds of participating households, with a raw material area of nearly 1,000 hectares, of which over 300 hectares have been cultivated entirely using organic methods. This is the initial success of the cooperative and also the motivation for me and the members to continue to make efforts in the next phase” - Ms. Thi Khui shared.
Organic products "touch" foreign markets
With the motto of “producing organic, clean, high-quality products to serve the domestic market as well as for export”, Ms. Thi Khui has taken advantage of social networks to bring information and advertise products to everyone. The good news spread far and wide, Indian, Dutch, German businesses… came to the cooperative to sign agreements, purchase, and at the same time guide people to grow organically according to standards.
Visiting and signing a purchase contract with Trang Co Bu Lach Organic Cashew Cooperative, Mr. Wim Schipper, Purchasing Director of Intersnack Vietnam Cashew Co., Ltd. said: The company has cashew processing factories in Vietnam. The company's desire is to access a source of clean, standard cashew nuts from the Vietnamese market. Through social networks, we learned about Trang Co Bu Lach Organic Cashew Cooperative. Through research, we were very impressed with the farming method of the farmers and signed a purchase contract according to the agreement.
From a simple M'nong woman, Ms. Thi Khui has become an example of determination, aspiration and bravery. Her story is not only about economic work but also a journey to affirm the intelligence and bravery of ethnic minority women in the process of innovation.
In the 2024 crop season, Trang Co Bu Lach organic cashew cooperative led by Ms. Thi Khui harvested about 700 tons of fresh cashew nuts. The selling price was about 2,000 VND/kg higher than the average. Notably, associated businesses supported 500,000 VND/ha for members. Up to now, many ethnic minority households in the locality have applied to join the cooperative to produce organic and clean cashews. Excited about the changes of the people in the area, village elder Dieu Toi shared: Clean cashew nuts, with the attention and orders from domestic and foreign businesses, make people very excited. People spread the word to each other, gradually changing their farming methods to develop together.
On the red basalt soil of Dong Nai province, cashew nuts are familiar to many generations of M'nong people. But thanks to innovative thinking and creative ways, Ms. Thi Khui has turned cashew nuts into "golden nuts", bringing a prosperous life to the people and spreading the name of the typical agricultural product of her hometown far and wide. Currently, in addition to producing organic cashews, every day Ms. Thi Khui and her members always spend time to find ancient cashew varieties, ensuring high productivity to grow and provide seedlings to the people...
