Certified trademark "Lam Dong Macadamia" - Leverage for "Green Diamond" to reach international level

For a long time, macadamia nuts have been known as "green diamonds" or "Queen of nuts" thanks to their outstanding nutritional and economic value.

The official establishment and management of the certification mark (NHCN) "Lam Dong Macadamia" is not only a legal milestone, but also affirms the locality's determination in transforming the macadamia industry from fragmented production to high-quality agriculture with the ability to compete globally.

Affirming the position of key raw material areas

Lam Dong is currently one of the key macadamia growing areas of the country. The total macadamia growing area of ​​the province has reached about 16,349 hectares, bringing an impressive output of 13,532 tons/year.

In the new development strategy, macadamia is identified as a key industry, which needs to take full advantage of the land and climate characteristics of the region.

The local ambition is much greater, with the goal of expanding the area to 37,000 hectares and achieving an output of over 45,000 tons by 2030. To realize this huge goal, a revolution in quality management and brand building is required, in which the “Lam Dong Macadamia” certification mark plays a key role.

Lam Dong possesses a solid internal advantage with a set of high-quality main macadamia varieties including 13 lines/varieties recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , along with an abundant supply of seedlings.

Lam Dong macadamia products have affirmed their position in the market, with a widespread domestic distribution system; in which, the products are mainly consumed domestically through channels such as: Supermarket systems nationwide; retail through e-commerce platforms, including the e-commerce information page www.nongsandalatlamdong.vn; direct livestream sales; retail at traditional markets, local retail stores.

Along with that, the export market for this industry is also quite stable, targeting demanding countries such as: the US, Korea, China, Japan and Australia.

Challenges in deep processing and quality standardization

However, the biggest bottleneck is currently in processing and quality control. Although there are about 47 processing facilities, most of them are still small-scale and stop at preliminary processing, drying and manual cracking.

The lack of industrial-scale factories and modern deep processing technology (producing oil, cakes, and cosmetics from macadamia) has made the added value of "Green Diamonds" not really commensurate with its potential.

In the context of integration, challenges in quality and branding are hindering the development of Lam Dong macadamia industry. Fragmented and small-scale production is still common, making it difficult to form large raw material areas that meet international standards.

Of the total 47 processing and primary processing facilities with a total designed capacity of about 10,545 tons of nuts/year, only about 11 facilities have a capacity of over 100 tons/year with a processing capacity of 7,580 tons/year (accounting for 71.9%); 5 facilities are certified with HACCP, ISO 22,000, HALAL and only about 1.9% of the total macadamia area is certified with VietGAP/organic.

The management of seed sources is still loose, leading to the use of seedlings of unknown origin, along with pressure from pests and diseases, directly affecting productivity and long-term quality. Currently, some companies are experimenting with the production of other products from macadamia such as macadamia oil, macadamia cake, macadamia chocolate, flavored macadamia... but the quantity is still limited.

Most importantly, the failure to build a unified collective brand has limited the ability to promote and protect product reputation in the international arena.

Linking production to certification marks

The “Lam Dong Macadamia” certification mark is expected to be a lever to thoroughly resolve the above issues. To quickly realize this goal, Lam Dong needs to simultaneously implement many key solutions.

First, the province must re-plan and develop a new unified Geographical Indication plan until 2030, clearly defining concentrated growing areas, closely linking with processing facilities and NHCN right from the beginning. This goes hand in hand with strengthening the management of seedling quality and expanding standardized parent tree gardens.

At the same time, standardizing processes and quality is a top priority. Localities need to transfer technical processes for sustainable macadamia cultivation and good agricultural practices (VietGAP/GlobalGAP) suitable for each sub-region.

After being granted a certificate of exclusive protection by the Intellectual Property Office, the brand name “Lam Dong Macadamia” will be a mandatory guideline, requiring all businesses and cooperatives to strictly comply with regulations on quality, food safety and clear traceability.

On the other hand, the province needs to promote value chain linkages to avoid the situation of “good harvest, low price”. In particular, building models of close linkage between production and consumption; at the same time, strengthening brand promotion activities associated with geographical indications and growing areas with traceability.

Sustainable development of the macadamia industry associated with the “Lam Dong Macadamia” certification mark is a comprehensive commitment. The early completion of the procedures for granting protection certificates will be the final legal and commercial push, helping Lam Dong’s “Green Diamond” firmly conquer demanding markets, bringing sustainable prosperity to this potential land of the Central Highlands.
