Bach Mai Hospital: Successfully performed many difficult techniques in neurology and spine

(Dan Tri) - According to Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, the hospital is the first unit in Vietnam to deploy many advanced techniques in neurology and spine.

On May 28, at a series of events held at Bach Mai Hospital, Associate Professor Co said that in the 10 years since its establishment, the departments of Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Spine, Social Work Department, and Quality Management Department have made remarkable progress.

The Department of Neurosurgery has successfully performed many difficult cases in the treatment of brain tumors, cerebral aneurysms, cerebral vascular malformations, spinal diseases, traumatic brain injuries, etc.

This is also the first neurosurgery unit in the country to apply minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of cerebral aneurysms.

Meanwhile, the Department of Orthopedics and Spine Trauma has made its mark with surgeries to treat injuries to the high cervical spine, surgery to correct hunchback, scoliosis, artificial disc replacement, artificial vertebral body replacement and many other minimally invasive surgical methods.

The Department is the first unit in Vietnam to deploy many advanced techniques: In 2016, the O-arm system was applied in spinal surgery and surgery was performed on about 1,000 patients; the Mako robot system was applied in joint replacement surgery, with more than 100 knee replacements.

In 2024, for the first time in Vietnam, the Department implemented direct endoscopic screw surgery on the odontoid process. To date, the Department has performed surgery on more than 100 patients with hip joint diseases using a minimally invasive anterior approach, helping patients recover quickly.

The hospital also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Quality Management Department and the Social Work Department.

The Social Work Department has so far mobilized more than 98 billion VND to support more than 19,000 patients in difficult circumstances; organized patient club activities, spiritual activities to help reduce stress, increase treatment compliance...

On the same day, the Hospital inaugurated the Vaccine Consulting and Vaccination Unit - Bach Mai Institute of Tropical Medicine. At the same time, it announced the human resource management system, financial accounting and smart digital university; opened training courses under Project 1816, basic training in emergency resuscitation and professional technical training.

Associate Professor Co said that in 2024, the Hospital granted scholarships for Emergency Resuscitation training to 160 doctors and nurses from the provinces.

This year, the Hospital continues to grant scholarships and train 300 doctors and nurses in basic emergency resuscitation in remote, border and particularly disadvantaged provinces.

"This will be an extremely valuable resource, contributing to improving the capacity of the health system in the Northern region, especially important in the context of the Covid-19 epidemic returning," Associate Professor Co said.

According to Associate Professor Co, Bach Mai Hospital is the first special-class general hospital in the country, specializing in high technology, providing comprehensive health care for the people. In recent years, the Hospital has made remarkable and comprehensive progress in all aspects, especially in the new era.
