The mystery of Picasso's ceramic art revealed after decades

In the early 1980s, Picasso's descendants bequeathed the collection to a close friend, and since then the ceramics have largely disappeared from public and professional view.

International connoisseurs are watching with great excitement as a unique ceramic collection by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) is set to be auctioned in Geneva, Switzerland.

This is the first time the public has the opportunity to fully admire the precious ceramic works created by the 20th century artistic genius himself, which were privately owned and kept secret for decades.

“This is a truly special collection,” said Bernard Piguet, director of the Piguet auction house in Geneva, proudly. “The plates, bowls and trays here are all authentic works by Picasso.”

According to Mr. Piguet, all of these ceramics were once owned by the Picasso family. In the early 1980s, the artist’s descendants gave them to a close friend. Since then, the collection has largely disappeared from the public and experts’ eyes.

This special collection was created by Picasso between 1947 and 1963 at the Madoura pottery workshop, located in the coastal town of Vallauris in southeastern France. This is also the place that marked the period when Picasso passionately explored ceramic materials, an unexpected direction for the great artist, after his brilliant achievements in painting and sculpture.

Familiar bird images from Picasso's art world are vividly recreated on traditional ceramic materials.

Experts estimate that the collection could fetch over $60,000, however, given its historical and artistic value, this figure could be completely broken at auction.

The entire collection is now on public display ahead of the auction, giving the public a rare opportunity to see firsthand the works in which Picasso breathed artistic soul into every terracotta line./.
