Picasso Sculpture Park - new free tourist attraction in the French capital

VTV.vn - France aims to increase the attraction of the "city of light" Paris with a Picasso sculpture park with completely free admission.

According to Ms. Cécile Debray - Director of the Picasso Museum in Paris, this special space will officially open in 2030, becoming the world's first open-air museum dedicated to the Spanish painting and sculpture genius.

The park, which will be the size of two Olympic swimming pools, will connect the museum’s back garden to a small adjacent public park. It will house around 12 of Picasso’s bronze sculptures, including his masterpiece “The She-Goat,” a life-size bronze goat created in 1950 that is still housed indoors at the Musée Picasso in Paris.

Picasso’s public installations have appeared in the US cities of New York and Chicago. However, the project in Paris is particularly significant because it is the first time the public can enter an open space and interact directly with the artist’s works. Ms. Debray believes that this will be a magical place to “escape” from the hustle and bustle of Paris, where residents and visitors can stroll among the art, even stop to enjoy it at the cafe-restaurant overlooking the park.

The project was initiated with the consent of the Paris city government, the French Ministry of Culture and especially the family of the great painter and sculptor Picasso. Mrs. Paloma Picasso - the artist's daughter - was moved to say that the project was "as vibrant as my father" and considered this a wonderful way for Paris to honor its talented father.

During his lifetime, Picasso considered Paris the center of his creative career. He lived and set up a studio there during World War II.

To mark the Picasso Museum’s 40th anniversary, in addition to the park, a new space will also be built to double the space for temporary exhibitions. The total estimated cost of the entire project – including the park and the extension – will be around 50 million euros (equivalent to 60 million USD), funded by businesses and the Picasso family. Construction is expected to start in 2028 and when completed, the Picasso sculpture park will become an “artistic oasis” right in the heart of the Marais – the most popular tourist attraction in Paris.
