Spanish police announced on October 24 that they had found the painting “ Still Life with Guitar ” by Pablo Picasso, after the work mysteriously disappeared while being transported to an exhibition in the southern city of Granada.
The painting, drawn with pencil and gouache paint (a water-based paint with an opaque surface, high coverage, bright colors) in 1919, is worth about 600,000 euros (700,000 USD), and is owned by a private collector in the capital Madrid.
The work was scheduled to be displayed at the CajaGranada Foundation Exhibition. However, when the vehicle carrying the artifacts was unsealed on October 6, the staff in charge discovered that the Picasso painting had disappeared.
According to information from the CajaGranada Foundation, every box on the truck was under video surveillance from the time it arrived, making the incident even more puzzling.
Spain's National Police said the work may never have been loaded onto a transport vehicle, but did not reveal where it was found.
Police images show forensic experts examining the crate containing the recovered artwork. The CajaGranada Foundation said it hoped “ Still Life with Guitar ” would still be able to be exhibited in the exhibition, which runs from October 9 to January 11, 2026.
Picasso's works are often the target of daring art thefts because of their enormous market value. Two of his paintings recently sold for more than $140 million at international auctions.
Born in 1881 in Malaga and died in 1973, Picasso is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, contributing to shaping many modern art movements./.
