Another perspective of Nguyen Tuan Cuong
As an art lecturer and designer of art education programs for primary and secondary school students (editor of art textbooks from grades 1 to 9), Nguyen Tuan Cuong's paintings contain the emotional depth and cultural memories of ethnic minorities in the northern mountainous region.
The images of wine bottles, red cloth, and time-stained wooden boards - everyday images but containing symbols of love, memories and bonds of ethnic minorities, become "codes" that recur over and over again in the series Men Tinh.

Sharing with Tuoi Tre Online, artist Nguyen Tuan Cuong said that in 2008, during a field trip, he came across a wedding of an ethnic minority.
Everyone was engrossed in drawing the people and activities in that bustling scene. He and his colleagues only focused on the wine bottles and cups placed in the middle of the house. He said that just looking at them, he could see all the unique cultural features of the ethnic minorities.
And Nguyen Tuan Cuong started to draw this theme from there. He chose the traditional Do paper material, because the rustic surface of the paper helps the image become illusory, bearing the mark of time.

Fate with the culture of ethnic minorities
Before painting the theme of ethnic minorities in the mountainous region, Nguyen Tuan Cuong tried painting rural landscapes and "Phai's streets", but he gave up because he did not find it satisfying to his creative emotions.
Born in Sa Pa and having spent some of his childhood here, painting on ethnic themes always gives him special feelings and his pen flies more freely.
Considered successful with works on ethnic minority themes, it was not until the series Men Tinh that Nguyen Tuan Cuong was able to show his own style, expressing the depths of his heart when thinking about ethnic people.
He painted the series of paintings in 2008, but only completed it in the past year, after he retired from the Central University of Art Education.
Sculptor Nguyen Xuan Thanh said that perhaps because his childhood was attached to the high mountains of Sa Pa, Nguyen Tuan Cuong has unforgettable memories of this land.
"Good drawing ability, meticulously expressing every detail. The artist draws details without forgetting the overall layout. The paintings have many details but are very concise. With the theme "Men Tinh" the artist draws many layouts, but it is still not boring, not mixed up, or repeated. It is thanks to the genuine emotions", said Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh.
