Unexpected scene on Hanoi street with AI camera

After a period of deploying the AI camera system to monitor traffic, on many streets in Hanoi, the situation of people violating traffic laws continues.

On many inner-city streets in Hanoi , "magic eyes" (AI cameras) are installed to record vehicles running red lights, people not wearing helmets or driving in the wrong lane.

The camera system, mounted directly on traffic light poles, is capable of identifying license plates and driver behavior, then transmitting the data to the City Police Command Information Center. The AI cameras are expected to improve traffic law compliance and reduce violations.

Ms. Thuy Linh (Giang Vo ward) shared: “Since the AI camera was installed, I see that traffic participants are more aware. Many people are afraid of being fined, so they follow the rules. I am the same.”

However, observations show that there are still many cases of deliberate violations when driving on roads equipped with AI cameras. On many streets in Hanoi, drivers still run red lights, do not wear helmets, and encroach on lanes reserved for BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) buses...

According to the reporter's records at the Giang Vo - Cat Linh intersection, although it is not rush hour, it is not difficult to see drivers speeding up when the traffic light turns yellow, even turning around right in the area with a prohibition sign.

As a ride-hailing driver, Minh Hieu (Thanh Xuan ward, Hanoi) said: “Even with AI cameras, many people still violate traffic rules, especially during rush hour. I used to do that too, but now I'm more afraid of getting fined later, so I've reduced it. When I'm in a hurry to deliver goods to customers, even when the red light has only 1-2 seconds left, I still try to squeeze through, even though I know it's a violation.”

He added that he had never been fined before, so he was sometimes subjective. “I think if someone is fined once, they will definitely learn from their mistakes,” Mr. Hieu said.

In addition, some traffic participants admitted that they were unaware of the existence of these "magic eyes", so out of habit, they crossed at red lights and entered clear lanes without knowing that they were priority lanes.

Some other opinions say that the AI camera system cannot record accurately in all situations. The camera only recognizes accurately when the vehicle is in the correct shooting angle; but in off-direction or obscured positions, the ability to detect violations will be significantly reduced.

Furthermore, the belief that the new camera system is still in the testing phase, not yet fully operational and officially enforcing traffic laws, is one of the reasons why people remain complacent and do not seriously comply with traffic laws. These are issues that need further improvement to maximize the effectiveness of the surveillance technology.

According to authorities, the installation of AI camera systems is a step forward in management, helping to detect, track, and handle violations more effectively. However, even though these smart cameras can record all violations, building a civilized city still relies heavily on the law-abiding awareness of traffic participants.
