Titled “Bust of a woman with a flowery hat,” the painting depicts Dora Maar, a French photographer, painter, and poet who was Picasso’s most famous muse. The colorful work was painted by Picasso on July 11, 1943, and was purchased by a French collector (the grandfather of the current owners) in August 1944.
According to experts, this painting has never been published to the public and has never been exhibited, except in Picasso's studio in Paris.
Maar was Picasso’s most important model and muse, with around 60 works inspired by her, including some of his most famous paintings, such as “The Weeping Woman,” “Portrait of Dora Maar,” and the oil painting “Guernica.” Some sources say that Maar’s nine-year relationship with Picasso helped rekindle the artist’s creative spark.
Picasso's works often sell for very high prices. The Spanish artist's most expensive painting is the 1955 oil painting "The Women of Algiers (Version O)" which sold for $179.4 million at Christie's in New York in 2015.
