Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital informed that it has just received an emergency patient case due to a bear attack.
The patient, Mr. Ly AP (42 years old, residing in Nam Po district, Dien Bien province), was hospitalized with a deformed face, complex open defect exposing facial bones, limited movement of the left forearm, and a 7cm wound on the shoulder blade.
Mr. P. was diagnosed with multiple complex injuries, facial tissue defects, around the eye socket, nose, maxillary defect fracture, left zygomatic arch fracture, and open fracture of the lower end of the left radius.
According to his family, at around 4:00 p.m. on April 28, at the edge of the forest bordering Vietnam and Laos, while hunting for bamboo rats in the forest, Mr. P. was suddenly attacked by a bear. He was then taken to the Lao People's Democratic Republic Hospital for first aid and then transferred to Vietnam.
As soon as he was admitted, Mr. P. was quickly resuscitated and given emergency paraclinical treatment. On April 30, the surgical team stopped the bleeding, removed infected and necrotic soft tissue, transferred the flap to cosmetically reconstruct the wound and combine it with the maxillofacial bone, splinted the nose, sutured the eyes, and fixed the left forearm.
After 3 hours of successful surgery, the patient was monitored and intensively cared for in the hospital's maxillofacial department.
After 7 days of treatment, the patient's condition is stable, the surgical wound is dry and clean, and the patient can walk easily.
According to Dr. Nguyen Trong Viet - Head of the Department of Dentistry, Dien Bien Provincial General Hospital, the patient suffered very severe injuries to his face and nose and lost a lot of blood.
"To preserve the face from being deformed, we transferred flaps to shape the defects and reshaped the nose and jawbone to preserve the patient's face.
"Wounds caused by animal bites and tears require more time for monitoring, treatment and recovery to avoid post-operative infection, bringing the best quality of life to the patient," said Dr. Viet.
Experts also advise people not to hunt wild animals for food or trade. Hunting wild animals is not only illegal but also leads to health consequences such as the above case - being attacked by wild animals.
