Barca once asked Lewandowski not to score more goals at the end of the 2022/23 season. |
Lewandowski joined Barcelona in 2022 for £42.5 million after eight brilliant years at Bayern Munich. He immediately became the mainstay of the attack and scored 23 goals in 34 games, making a big contribution to helping the Catalan team regain the La Liga title.
But behind the glamour lies Barcelona's stifling financial situation. And according to a new book, the economic pressure was so great that the club's leadership invited Lewandowski to a meeting with President Joan Laporta, to propose not scoring any more goals in the last two games of the season.
The reason? If Lewandowski reaches 25 goals, Barcelona will have to pay Bayern £2.2m as per the contract. With the championship and the Pichichi trophy almost decided, the board want to avoid this additional expense.
The book says: "Barcelona told Lewandowski: 'Robert, we want you to stop scoring in the remaining games.' He looked at them in amazement. After more than a decade of playing at the highest level, no one had ever asked him to stop scoring."
Lewandowski then went practically silent in the final two rounds, but still won the Golden Boot. This revelation is causing a huge controversy in Spain, raising questions about the extent of Barca's financial crisis and the pressure their stars face.
