Mr. Luu Trong Bang, an employee of the Nga Doi forest protection station, belonging to Huong Son Forestry and Services Co., Ltd., located in Son Kim 1 commune, said that he has been working here for more than 25 years.
According to Mr. Bang, to have the lim tree forest thriving as it is today, those of us tasked with protecting the forest have had to overcome countless difficulties, hardships, and even life-threatening dangers.
Mr. Bang recalled that in the 1990s, the deforestation of upstream forests in the border area between Vietnam and Laos in Huong Son district was very serious, leaving many forests devastated and impoverished. From the outside, few people knew that the forests inside had been "cleared" to an alarming extent. To prevent this, forest rangers and forest owners had to patrol and monitor throughout the night; they often clashed with illegal loggers.
The headwater forests in Huong Son district are rich and diverse in species, with a considerable timber reserve. To preserve these forests from destruction, a well-structured policy is necessary. Local authorities and forest rangers have implemented a policy of allocating land and contracting forest management to the people. In particular, the restoration and regeneration of green lim trees into seed forests has been carried out.

The green ironwood tree in the ancient forest is over 100 years old.
"Now people are aware that preserving and protecting the forest is also protecting their own lives and the lives of their children. Currently, most of the natural forest area in the region is managed and protected by the people under contract. In particular, the regeneration of valuable timber forests, such as green lim, tau, and doi... is increasingly emphasized, contributing to enriching forest resources and enhancing the value of the natural forest ecosystem for people's lives," Mr. Bang said enthusiastically.
Mr. Bang added that in Sub-area 51, Son Kim 1 commune alone, there are currently about 60 hectares of towering green lim trees with lush branches and leaves, many with diameters of 80-100 cm. It can be said that the ancient green lim forest here not only brings immense value to the ecosystem and environment but also provides seeds and preserves the rare lim wood gene pool for large-scale propagation.
Mr. Bui Trong Thai, Deputy Head of Huong Son Forest Ranger Station, said that in addition to urging forest owners to develop plans for managing, caring for, and protecting green lim forests, the unit's responsibility is to constantly strengthen inspection and supervision of forest owners in implementing the plans they have set out; and to focus on patrolling and controlling the forest at the source.
Mr. Hoang Van Thu, Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Kim 1 commune, also stated that in addition to the awareness of each citizen, the task of protecting and developing forests is always given special attention by the local government.
Thanks to this, for decades, the rare and ancient green teak forest here has remained unharmed and is thriving.
