According to current regulations, the age limit of automobiles is applied in general. Specifically, cargo vehicles have an age limit of no more than 25 years, passenger vehicles have an age limit of no more than 20 years, and vehicles that have been converted from other types of vehicles to passenger vehicles before January 1, 2002 have a maximum age limit of 17 years.
The Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety, effective from January 1, 2025, has assigned the Ministry of Transport the responsibility of issuing specific regulations on the age limit of motor vehicles. Therefore, the Ministry of Transport is consulting the Government to amend current regulations to ensure compliance with the new situation.

In the draft Decree, the Ministry of Transport proposed to add regulations on the age limit for four-wheeled passenger vehicles with engines and provide specific instructions on how to calculate the age limit of motor vehicles.
Specifically, the recommended life span of cars is as follows:
- Cargo vehicles (trucks), specialized cargo vehicles and four-wheeled motor vehicles will have a life span of no more than 25 years.
- Passenger cars with 10 seats or more (including the driver), specialized passenger cars and four-wheeled motor vehicles will have a life span of no more than 20 years.
- In particular, vehicles transporting preschool children and students are also proposed to have a 20-year usage limit.
In addition, the draft also clearly states that types of vehicles not subject to age regulations include: motorbikes, scooters, passenger cars with less than 8 seats (excluding the driver), special-purpose cars, trailers and semi-trailers, along with military and police motor vehicles serving national defense and security purposes.
Regarding the calculation of the age, the period of use of a motor vehicle will start from the year of manufacture and last until December 31 of the year the vehicle expires. In some special cases, with the permission of the Prime Minister , the period of use can be calculated from the time of first registration of the car.
This draft Decree is receiving much attention from experts and businesses operating in the transport sector, with the expectation of creating positive changes and improving road traffic safety in the coming time.
