23 Vietnamese standards on electric vehicle charging stations and poles have been announced.
According to Mr. Tran Hong Ngoc, up to now, the Ministry of Science and Technology has published 23 Vietnamese standards (TCVN) related to electric vehicle charging posts and stations. These standards include: 8 TCVNs on electric vehicle charging systems, regulating general requirements, electronic interfaces, communications between charging posts and electric vehicles, as well as safety requirements for power supply systems, switching and low-voltage control; 3 TCVNs on electric vehicle charging cables; 7 TCVNs on plugs, sockets for electric vehicle charging posts and stations; 5 TCVNs on electrical measuring equipment.
Notably, these standards are built to be completely equivalent to the standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), along with the regulations of the European Commission (EU). This ensures international compatibility and integration for products and services related to electric vehicles in Vietnam.
To carry out this work, the Ministry of Science and Technology has established specialized technical committees on national standards, such as TC22 (road vehicles), TC17 (technical design and electrical systems in construction works), and TCM16 (power transmission systems for electric vehicles). These technical committees have the participation of state management agencies, domestic and foreign enterprises, associations, universities, and experts with experience in the field of electric vehicles and charging stations in general. The activities of these committees comply with international principles and practices in standard development.
In addition to developing standards, the Ministry of Science and Technology is also focusing on developing national technical regulations on electric vehicle charging stations and posts for tighter management. This process includes steps such as researching international regulations and experiences, surveying manufacturing, assembling, importing, trading and testing units in the North, Central and South regions. After that, the Ministry has drafted the standards, sent them for wide comments from ministries, branches, localities and enterprises, posted them on the website of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Government Electronic Information Portal, and notified the World Trade Organization (WTO). The Ministry has received, synthesized and processed the recommendations to complete the standards.

The quality of charging stations will be strictly managed when they are put on the market.
Also at the press conference, the leader of the Ministry of Science and Technology informed that the Ministry has completed the draft of Vietnam standards and is preparing to issue them to serve state management and business production activities of enterprises. Previously, charging stations often operated according to basic standards that were self-declared and certified by enterprises. However, the implementation process showed that stricter management was needed. The new draft standards are built according to eight very strict management methods, to ensure the quality of charging stations when they are introduced to the market in the near future.
The standardization of electric vehicle charging stations is part of the Ministry of Science and Technology’s overall efforts to promote national science, technology, innovation and digital transformation (S&T). This is in the spirit of Resolution No. 57 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in national S&T, innovation and digital transformation, and Resolution 71/NQ-CP of the Government. The goal is to create a foundation for a digital government that operates transparently and effectively, and towards a unified, shared national digital infrastructure that ensures connectivity, synchronization and safety.
Although there are concerns that the charging stations of some electric vehicle manufacturers may not have complied with any specific national standards in Vietnam, the Ministry of Science and Technology affirmed that it will make efforts to overcome this by urgently completing a tighter corridor in this field, creating a solid legal environment for the sustainable development of electric vehicles in Vietnam.
