After being discharged from the army, Mr. Cu grew sticky rice, dragon fruit, and raised livestock on a small scale. In recent years, the price of dragon fruit has been unstable, so he decided to find a new direction.
Knowing that his daughter in Tien Giang province had successfully raised French-cross pigeons , he came to learn about their care, how to build cages, and how to prevent and control diseases for the birds. After that, he boldly bought 1,000 pairs of breeding pigeons (priced at 450,000 VND/pair) to raise.
Thanks to his diligence and his daughter's support, the birds are growing well. Currently, he has more than 2,500 pairs of pigeons, with a monthly revenue of around 120 million VND, and a profit of 30-40%. The quantity sold is not enough to supply the market.
Every month, Mr. Truong Van Cu (Long Tri commune, Chau Thanh district) has a high income from raising French-bred pigeons.
According to Mr. Cu, the selection of breeds is very important. Breeders need to choose breeding birds from reputable establishments, ensuring they are healthy, agile, and have smooth, shiny feathers.
Each year, pigeons lay 8-10 clutches of 2 eggs each (depending on care conditions). A pair of pigeons can lay eggs for 5 years, but from the 3rd year onwards, fertility gradually decreases.
Mr. Cu's pigeon farm is nearly 700m2 , with a corrugated iron roof, a cooling system and a surrounding net. The coop is airy, clean and quiet. He designed each row of coops in tiers to save space. The coop has feeders, waterers and nests for laying eggs. The incubation period is about 16-18 days, and 3-4 weeks later (when the birds are fledged) they can be sold. To increase the number of chicks and develop a stable source of breed, Mr. Cu uses an incubator.
According to Mr. Cu, this is a very important step. The breeder needs to number the eggs in order of which nest they belong to in order to return the chicks to the correct position after hatching. If it is not her chick, the mother bird will pick it up and throw it out.
Pigeon food is easy to find and can be a combination of natural and industrial food. “Breeders need to closely monitor this process. If the birds eat little or do not gain weight, they should switch to another type immediately,” Mr. Cu shared.
Mr. Cu pays close attention to hygiene, ensuring that the inside and outside of the farm are clean and free of pollution. Bird droppings are cleaned regularly, he bags them and sews them up, selling them for 30,000 VND/bag.
Mr. Truong Van Cu's French-cross pigeon breeding model was awarded the 8th Certificate of Technical Innovation by the Provincial Farmers' Association.
Over the years, Mr. Cu has been enthusiastic about social work. With economic development, he has more opportunities to participate. In the future, if things go well, he will expand the model and continue to share so that many people can develop their economies together./.
