On the morning of June 2, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management ( Ministry of Health ) sent a document to the People's Committee of Nghe An province, requesting to strengthen hospital security and urgently investigate and strictly handle the case of assault on medical staff at Nghe An General Hospital.
The Department also requested provincial leaders to promptly visit and encourage the medical staff and patients affected by the incident.
On the evening of June 1, a 40-second clip appeared on social media, recording a man arguing with a female medical staff at the reception desk. The man then leaned over the counter and punched the female hospital staff member.
This person only stopped after his family and hospital security intervened.
The online community expressed outrage at the violence in the medical environment.
In the past few months, many cases of assault on doctors and nurses have occurred continuously in hospitals across the country, showing the alarming reality of violence in the medical environment - a place that should be a safe haven for both patients and caregivers.
In March, a doctor in Gia Lai was assaulted by a patient’s family, resulting in psychological trauma. On April 25, doctors at Thanh Ba Medical Center (Phu Tho) were also pushed and attacked by a patient’s family while treating a 12-year-old girl in anaphylactic shock. On May 4, at Nam Dinh General Hospital, a medical staff member was pushed and punched in the face while on duty.
According to the Ministry of Health, more than 70% of victims of violence in hospitals are doctors, about 15% are nurses. Notably, most of the incidents occur at the provincial and district levels - where medical resources are limited, the workload is large, and the medical staff is always overloaded.
The common cause comes from the patient's legitimate desire to be examined quickly and thoroughly. However, in reality, many places cannot meet all expectations, and conflicts easily arise. When pressure from both relatives and medical staff is added together, even a small situation can trigger violent behavior.
Dr. Ha Anh Duc, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, affirmed that assaulting medical staff is unacceptable behavior, especially when medical staff are performing professional duties. “Absolute safety must be ensured so that doctors and nurses can save people in the most stressful conditions,” said Mr. Duc.
