On the afternoon of April 17, the Drug Administration of Vietnam ( Ministry of Health ) informed about counterfeit drugs that were recently seized by the police.
Accordingly, on the evening of April 16, through press information: Thanh Hoa Provincial Police have just "dismantled a large-scale production and trading of fake modern medicine nationwide, arrested 14 subjects for the crime of producing and trading in counterfeit goods such as disease prevention and treatment drugs", the Ministry of Health (Department of Drug Administration) has issued urgent document No. 1119/QLD-CL dated April 17, 2025 to the Department of Health of Thanh Hoa province requesting to provide information, closely coordinate with the Police Agency to fight, clarify, strictly handle law violators and thoroughly recall drugs that have been counterfeited and put on the market.
“Initial information from the Thanh Hoa Department of Health and other functional units shows that the above products have not been found in medical examination and treatment facilities; the products counterfeited by these subjects cannot penetrate the public hospital system because they do not have documents or certificates to participate in bidding. These counterfeit products are mainly sold online; at retail channels.
Among the 21 types of products seized by the police, there were 04 types of fake modern medicine (44 boxes of Tetracycline, 40 boxes of Clorocid, 49 boxes of Pharcoter, 52 boxes of Neo-Codion); the remaining 39,323 boxes included 17 types of fake products suspected to be oriental medicine, products with labels stating the intended use as medicine" , the Drug Administration informed.
To ensure drug quality, the Ministry of Health has implemented a series of pre- and post-control activities throughout the entire process of drug production, trading and use, strengthened inspection and examination work, and issued many decisions to impose strict administrative penalties on organizations and individuals who violate the law.
The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Public Security signed coordination regulations No. 03/QCPH-BCA-BYT dated November 18, 2024, in which the two ministries will coordinate in providing information, documents, and situations related to the production, business, import-export, distribution and circulation of drugs, including counterfeit and poor-quality drugs.
Implementing Directive 17/CT-TTg dated June 19, 2018 of the Prime Minister, in recent years, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Health and other Ministries and Branches through Steering Committee 389 have deployed a series of activities to prevent the production and trade of counterfeit drugs, detect and handle organizations and individuals who violate the law.
The Ministry of Health has issued many documents directing the People's Committees of provinces, Departments of Health and units to strengthen the inspection and supervision of drug quality; regularly coordinate with functional agencies to fight against counterfeit drugs and drugs of unknown origin. The rate of counterfeit drugs in recent years has been below 0.1%.
On April 16, Thanh Hoa Provincial Police announced that the Economic Police Department of the Provincial Police had dismantled a large-scale nationwide counterfeit drug production and trading ring, arresting 14 subjects for the crime of "producing and trading counterfeit disease prevention and treatment drugs".
Through the investigation, the subjects confessed that from 2021 until their arrest, they had sold a large quantity of fake drugs to the market, with an estimated illegal profit of nearly 200 billion VND.
