On October 10, the Food Safety Department ( Ministry of Health ) said that it had just received information about a suspected food poisoning incident at Lao Cai College (address: M9 Street, Bac Cuong Ward, Lao Cao City, Lao Cai Province), in which about 50 students showed symptoms of stomachache, nausea and diarrhea after having dinner at the school canteen.
In response to the above incident, the Food Safety Department issued Official Dispatch No. 2607/ATTP-NDTT dated October 10, 2024 requesting the Lao Cai Provincial Department of Health to temporarily suspend the operation of the school canteen - where food poisoning is suspected to have occurred.
At the same time, urgently organize investigations and trace the origin of food to clearly identify the source of raw materials and food for processing facilities suspected of causing poisoning; take food and specimen samples for testing to find the cause; strictly handle violations of food safety regulations (if any) and publicize the results to promptly warn the community.

The Food Safety Department also requested the Lao Cai Provincial Department of Health to strengthen propaganda and guidance for collective kitchens and food service establishments to ensure hygiene and food safety conditions, strictly manage the origin of food ingredients, 3-step food inspection, store food samples and hygiene in processing stages. At the same time, strictly implement the contents of Official Dispatch No. 2487/BYT-ATTP dated May 11, 2024 and Official Dispatch No. 3113/BYT-ATTP dated June 7, 2024 of the Ministry of Health on preventing and handling food poisoning and strengthening food poisoning prevention.
According to information from the Lao Cai Provincial Department of Health, on October 9-10, Hung Thinh Lao Cai General Hospital admitted 50 students from Lao Cai College and the Vocational Guidance Center for Continuing Education with symptoms of digestive disorders.
Lao Cai Department of Health has directed the following units: Food Safety Department, Center for Disease Control to conduct investigation and collect samples for testing.
Preliminary investigation results show that: In the early morning of October 9, a number of students from Lao Cai College and the Vocational Guidance Center for Continuing Education in the dormitory of Lao Cai College, Campus 1 (Bac Cuong Ward, Lao Cai City) showed signs of abdominal pain, vomiting, loose stools, fever and were taken to Hung Thinh General Hospital for treatment by teachers and their families. By the morning of October 10, 50 students had been hospitalized.
The above cases are being monitored and treated at the Department of Emergency Resuscitation, Surgery, Internal Medicine - Pediatrics of Hung Thinh General Hospital. Currently, the health condition of the patients is stable, progressing well, with no serious complications.
Previously, on the evening of October 8, the students had dinner at the canteen; however, they did not eat the same food but ate a variety of dishes such as: rice, soup, stir-fried vegetables, chicken, pork stir-fried with onions, etc. On the morning of October 9, some cases showed symptoms of fever, stomachache, vomiting, and loose stools.
Lao Cai College continues to monitor the health of students at the dormitory; at the same time, it announced the temporary suspension of the kitchen at campus 1 until the conclusion of the authorities./.
