Building a love of books from school

Being present at Kham Lang Primary School (Bac Lung commune) during a reading period, we felt the passion and love for books of the students here. According to Mr. Vu Tri Khoi, Principal, to maintain the habit of reading for students, the school organizes reading promotion activities, forming and developing reading habits such as: Reading books at the library, in open spaces; borrowing books to read at home; organizing reading in class in the first 15 minutes of class, reading books for the whole school every week in the school yard during recess; organizing reading periods at the library in many different forms, arranging timetables to ensure 1 period/week/class, organizing lessons at the library by subject, educational activities; organizing Book Festivals, Reading Weeks, reading books by topic, storytelling competitions based on books, writing about books; organizing Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day every year.

At Long Chau Primary School (Yen Phong commune), the library is arranged in a friendly, scientific space, suitable for students' ages. From the 2019-2020 school year, the school built a friendly library with an area of 120 ^m2 , equipped with bookshelves, carpets, tables and chairs and books of all color codes for library reading sessions, for students from grade 1 to grade 5. Up to now, the school library has about 8,000 books, newspapers, magazines... The school periodically adds books suitable for the actual teaching and learning program. In addition to adding textbooks, reference books, books for children such as: Comics, literature, fairy tales, English learning books... the school also calls on students and parents to donate old books to the library to supplement the bookcases, serving the reading needs of students, contributing to spreading the reading movement in the school. Every year, with the core mission of "Building a friendly library and developing a reading culture", the school has created a timetable with library reading sessions so that students can have more access to books; organized for students to borrow and read books at the library during the summer vacation; oriented to help students participate in the "Reading Culture Ambassador" playground, responding to Vietnam Book Day...

Create an open reading space

To develop a reading culture for children, many schools have joined hands to create open, lively and attractive reading spaces to connect the love of books and form lifelong learning skills. Up to now, 100% of primary schools in the province have school libraries and thousands of bookshelves in classrooms. Many schools have invested in smart libraries and modern electronic libraries to meet the needs of studying, researching, searching for books and reference materials of staff, teachers and students.

In recent times, the Provincial Library has focused on increasing the number of books and genres of books and newspapers for children; promoting book display and introduction activities; rotating books to grassroots bookcases, school libraries... This past summer alone, the Provincial Library welcomed nearly 17,000 children readers to experience, borrow and read books.

Children's reading habits can also be shaped from public spaces. In addition to the school library system, the province also has many reading spaces dedicated to children. In particular, the Provincial Library has focused on increasing the number of books and genres of books and newspapers serving children; promoting book display and introduction activities; rotating books to grassroots bookcases, school libraries... Last summer alone, the Provincial Library welcomed nearly 17,000 children readers to experience, borrow and read books.

In addition, the library system in communes, wards and many libraries of mass organizations such as the Women's Union, Veterans Association, Youth Union, family, clan and individual bookcases... are ready to serve children. These are unique and creative spaces maintained to spread and develop reading culture among children. Typical examples include the Dong Xuyen Stork Village Library (Yen Phong Commune), Mao Dien Village Library (Mao Dien Commune); the library of former teachers of Phuong Mao Quarter (Phuong Lieu Ward); the Happiness Bookcase (Nhan Hoa Ward); the Duong Huu Commune Library...

According to education researcher Nguyen Quoc Vuong, in order to continue to form the habit of reading and develop a reading culture for children, units, schools and localities need to further strengthen propaganda work, replicate reading promotion models, and create a reading space that is friendly to children. In particular, focus on developing and replicating the model of family bookcases, clan bookcases, school bookcases, and family reading - connecting love models. In particular, parents need to set an example for their children, spend time reading and guiding their children to read, let their children participate in book storytelling competitions, create confidence for their children... thereby creating interest and helping them love reading.

With the attention and cooperation of all levels, sectors, schools, families and the whole society, reading culture has been spreading more and more widely. From there, it has formed a beauty in cultural and spiritual life and practically built a learning society.
