Bang Kieu received strong reactions from the audience for two tactless acts. First, he belittled the talent of Asian superstar G-Dragon with insulting words like "one-eyed".

Second, he dragged two colleagues into his personal scandal - something quite taboo in showbiz.

In just 2 years, Bang Kieu has caused controversy many times.

In August 2025, in the context of the whole country proudly and joyfully looking forward to the A80 event, Bang Kieu shared a video of his son Bang Truong performing at an event called "50-year journey of Vietnamese Americans" in California, USA with the image of the flag of the old regime.

In June 2025, he was criticized for bringing his son, Benly, into the performance Even though there are mistakes at the concert Anh trai vu ngan cong gai . Letting the child sing the climax affected the audience's experience and the overall feeling of the performance; in addition, the 4-year-old performing a song about love was also considered inappropriate.

In 2023, Bang Kieu was also criticized for saying: "My audience is all rich people, people my age and above, from age to success. Young people and students, where do they get money, how can they have supercars and stuff. I am proud and humbled to see that my audience is all rich people."

When accused of discriminating against the audience, looking down on the audience segment of young people and students, Bang Kieu still plays the old trick of "being humorous and joking", "speaking in a context of teasing the audience", without a word of apology but hoping the audience "does not blame and share" with him.

10 years of absence and the biggest 'stain' of his career

Bang Kieu used to be one of the outstanding singers of the previous generation. Over time, not many Generation Z audiences still remember his scandalous past, especially the 10-year absence from Vietnam of this singer.

Specifically, in 2002 - after more than a year of touring abroad, Bang Kieu settled in the US and made statements that angered the public.

In November 2004, the Department of Performing Arts issued an official dispatch stating that singer Bang Kieu voluntarily left the country, made statements distorting the human rights regime, and seriously violated Vietnamese law, so it was decided that this singer would not enjoy the rights of a Vietnamese artist.

The Department requests that the Departments of Culture and Information, radio and television stations nationwide, publishers, art units, professional art performance organizers, and units producing and distributing discs, music, dance, and theater not use in any form the performances of singer Bang Kieu and the songs he composed.

For tape programs and published publications that have been authorized for release, when continuing to reproduce or republish, Bang Kieu's performances as well as his compositions must be removed.

This event caused Bang Kieu to be absent from Vietnam for 10 years. It was not until 2012 that he was able to sing again in his homeland.
