How do universities calculate the difference in scores between admission groups?

National Economics University only considers high school graduation exam scores with 4 combinations including A00, A01, D01, D07, and determines that there is no score deviation; University of Social Sciences and Humanities determines the score deviation of the combinations according to each major/training program.

In the same group, each industry has a different deviation in scores.

This year's admission season, with the method of considering high school graduation exam scores, Hanoi Capital University only has three majors that consider four groups of subjects, including C00 (literature, history, geography), C03 (literature, math, history), C19 (literature, history, economic education and law), C14 (literature, math, economic education and law).

In the school's announcement on July 23, for majors with combination C00, the remaining combinations will be added 0.75 points. For other majors, the school does not announce the difference in scores between combinations.

At the Diplomatic Academy, this year, admission is based on 13 groups, including C00 (math, literature, English), D01 (math, literature, English), D03 (math, literature, French), D04 (math, literature, Chinese), D06 (math, literature, Japanese), A00 (math, physics, chemistry), A01 (math, physics, English), D07 (math, chemistry, English), DD2 (math, literature, Korean), D09 (math, English, history), D10 (math, English, geography), D14 (literature, history, English), D15 (literature, geography, English).

Regarding the score deviation, the academy determined that the C00 admission combination is 3 points higher than the D01 combination. The remaining combinations have no score deviation.

Hanoi Law University uses combination D01 (math, literature, English) as the base combination to determine the difference in scores with the school's 8 admission combinations.

The results determined that combination A00 (math, physics, chemistry) is 1.39 points higher than D01, A01 (math, physics, English) is 0.29 points higher, C00 (literature, history, geography) is 3.24 points higher; the remaining combinations D02, D03, D04, D05, D06 have no difference in scores with combination D01.

Unlike the above schools, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi determines the deviation of scores between groups according to each major/training program, not determining the general deviation for all majors.

Specifically, when the C00 combination (literature, history, geography) was taken as the original combination for comparison for 26/28 training programs, the results had a deviation of 1.5 - 3.5 points, the highest deviation was for journalism, Oriental studies, Korean studies...; for philosophy and 8 other majors, the deviation was only 1.5 points.

For example, for journalism, the original admission combination is C00. If the standard score for the original combination C00 is 28 points, then the standard score for combination D01 is 24.5 points.

If at Hanoi Capital University, the C00 combination (literature, history, geography) is only 0.75 points different from the C03 combination (literature, math, history), then at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the difference is determined to be from 1 to 2.5 points, depending on the training major.

Many schools do not determine the difference in scores between admission combinations.

National Economics University uses four combinations, including A00 (math, physics, chemistry), A01 (math, physics, English), D01 (math, literature, English), D07 (math, chemistry, English), but the school determined that there is no difference in admission scores and passing scores between the combinations, so no conversion is conducted.

National Economics University only converts equivalent benchmark scores between admission methods including high school graduation exam scores, SAT scores, HSA competency assessment test scores, TSA thinking assessment test scores, and V-ACT competency assessment test scores.

Comparing admission methods, National Economics University converts 28 - 30 high school graduation exam points equivalent to 114 - 128 HSA assessment test points; 22 - 24 high school graduation exam points equivalent to 85 - 89 HSA assessment test points.

Conversion ensures fairness and transparency

According to the admission guidance document of the Ministry of Education and Training, the principles for developing score conversion rules must ensure equivalence; be based on actual input requirements; ensure fairness, transparency, publicity and consistency; ensure scientific and practicality; be simple and easy to understand.

According to the analysis of the technical advisory team, the ministry encourages training institutions to use the percentile method in the case of converting scores between exams to ensure candidate rankings, fairness, transparency and stability according to exam periods and admission years.

Percentile Equating is a method based on the score distribution of two exams, determining the score at the same percentile to convert. In this way, percentile converts scores into percentile levels, helping to indicate the candidate's position in the overall score of the group.
