Emotions of Liberation Day in Lang Son Folk Songs - Lang Son Newspaper and Radio and Television Station

- At the end of April, the feeling of the autumn day surged in the hearts of the people of Lang Son. With emotion and pride, the artisans and folk song lovers in the province told the story of the day of liberation of the South and national reunification in a simple yet profound way through the melodies of Then, Sli, Luon... Through each song sung, the listeners seemed to relive a time of fire and smoke, deeply feeling the meaning of solidarity, patriotism and above all, pride in the cultural roots of the Vietnamese people.

For decades, the then verses "Then the day the war ended/ The country was completely independent, the North and South were united/ In the overwhelming joy/ Mother knew, her husband and children were only in her boundless memories" in the touching "Then song for mother" written by the late musician Dinh Quang Khai ( Lang Son city) were often sung in many art programs celebrating the Liberation Day of the South and National Reunification (April 30) every year in the province.

Ms. Hoang Anh Hong, Tan My commune, Van Lang district shared: Every time I sing those songs, I always feel indescribable emotions. I see the image of heroic Vietnamese mothers in each song, feel the pain, loss as well as the pride of women after the country's victory. Along with "Then song for mother", I can sing about 10 Then songs about the day of complete liberation of the South, reunification of the country and often sing them in cultural programs in communes and villages.

Since the day of national reunification (April 30, 1975) until now, many generations of artists, artisans, and folk song lovers in the province have composed, written lyrics, and performed folk songs in the Then, Sli, Luon melodies... to tell the story of the day of total victory. These could be folk songs about the day of national reunification, integrated into folk songs praising the homeland and country... or it could be a whole folk song written specifically on this topic.

According to incomplete statistics from the authorities, currently, in the folk song treasury of the ethnic people in Lang Son, there are over 60 then, sli, and luon songs with content about the day of national reunification. This number continues to increase because every year, on the occasion of April 30, in the jubilant atmosphere of the big holiday, artists and artisans take up their pens to compose, write lyrics, or sing randomly according to the flow of emotions in the events leading up to the day of liberation of the South and national reunification. It is not only composing, it is also the process of preserving memories through ethnic music , a way to retell historical stories in a language familiar to the ethnic minority communities in the border areas of the Fatherland.

Ms. Lam Bich Liem, Trung Cap village, Mai Pha commune, Lang Son city shared: I am not a writer or a poet, I am just someone who knows how to sing sli and loves my ethnic language. Every time the anniversary of the country's reunification day approaches, my heart is filled with pride, the sli lyrics seem to ring in my head, urging me to write to preserve and share with my brothers and sisters to sing together. Since I learned to sing sli, I have composed lyrics for 6 songs praising my homeland and country after the reunification day. Recently, I composed lyrics for the song "Vã slam slíp bươn slì" (meaning April 30) in the sli melody of Nùng Phàn Sính.

Those simple songs, imbued with love for the country, were brought by her to club activities and festivals in the province as a way to express her love and pride for her homeland and country.

Mr. Phung Van Muon, Chairman of the Provincial Folk Song Preservation Association, said: Folk songs of ethnic groups such as the Tay and Nung in Lang Son are not only closely associated with daily life but can also be considered a 'means' to preserve historical memories, reflecting 'current events' deeply. Every event, every change in the country is breathed into folk songs by artists and artisans, and then those songs are spread orally in the ethnic communities. Therefore, every year, the association always encourages clubs to create conditions for talented members to compose, attach folk song lyrics to holidays and teach widely to spread in the community.

The song "North and South reunite in one house" was composed by the head of the folk song club Bjoc Ven, Van Quan district.

Accordingly, on holidays such as April 30 and National Day September 2, many mass folk song clubs often organize activities related to historical themes. At these activities, members exchange new ways of writing lyrics according to the theme, and teach each other folk songs that new members have composed, inspired by the country's major holidays. These activities have profound spiritual value, as an opportunity to review history, helping each person gain more understanding and pride in the history of the nation's struggle.

During these days, when the whole country is looking forward to the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, songs are being sung in many places in Lang Son. That is the way that folk songs contribute to preserving and conveying memories of the day of national reunification to the people. Through lyrics and singing, the spirit of patriotism and national pride is naturally spread in the community of ethnic groups in Lang Son, so that each person appreciates and strives to contribute to building and protecting the independence and freedom of the Fatherland.
