The 207 million yen bluefin tuna weighed 276kg and was caught off the coast of Oma, Aomori Prefecture. The winning bidder was a joint venture between a businessman and a representative of the Ginza Onodera Sushi restaurant chain.
"It was as fat as a cow, like a dream to me. I don't know how much longer I can do this job, and I'm really happy to have caught it," 73-year-old fisherman Takeuchi Masahiro shared about the moment he caught the giant tuna.
Local media reported that this was the second highest-priced tuna in history, reflecting expectations for Japan's economic recovery in 2025. The current record still belongs to a tuna that cost 333.6 million yen (nearly 72 billion VND), sold at auction in 2019.
