The shape of Thai Hoa Palace - the largest and most beautiful wooden palace of the ancient Nguyen Dynasty Royal Palace - is gradually emerging after nearly 3 years of restoration.
With a history of more than 200 years, Thai Hoa Palace is the most important palace in the ancient Hue Imperial Citadel area. (Photo: ND) This palace was also the coronation place of 13 Nguyen Dynasty kings, from Gia Long to Bao Dai. (Photo: ND) After more than 200 years of existence, Thai Hoa Palace has seriously degraded. In response to this situation, in 2020, the Government approved funds from the central budget reserve to urgently restore and repair this relic. However, it was not until the end of November 2021 that the restoration of Thai Hoa Palace began with a budget of about 128 billion VND. (Photo: ND) The project has a total area of 7,100 m2, of which the Thai Hoa Palace campus has a total area of 4,851.3 m2, Thai Hoa Palace 1,440 m2, and Dai Trieu Nghi yard 1,640 m2. Although not yet completed, the restored Thai Hoa Palace is highly appreciated by tourists for retaining the ancient features of royal architecture and demonstrating the authority of the Nguyen Dynasty Royal Family. Currently, workers and artisans are still working hard to soon complete the restoration of Thai Hoa Palace. It is expected that the restoration of the palace will be completed by 2025. Before that, on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2024, although the renovation has not been completed, according to the wishes of the people, the center will also open the temple to welcome visitors on the upcoming Tet holiday.
Thai Hoa Palace was started by King Gia Long on February 21, 1805 and completed in October of the same year. The construction and restoration of Thai Hoa Palace was divided into three main periods; each period had major changes and improvements in architecture and decoration. Through the restorations under the Nguyen Dynasty, Thai Hoa Palace has changed somewhat, its ancient appearance has been somewhat reduced. However, its basic structure is still preserved, especially the architectural structure and decorative arts.
Thai Hoa Palace is the symbol of the power of the Nguyen Dynasty. The palace, together with the audience courtyard, is the place used for important court ceremonies. On these occasions, the king sits majestically on the throne. Only the Four Pillars of Government and the king's royal relatives are allowed to enter the palace for an audience.
In Thai Hoa Palace, there is a national treasure, the throne of the Nguyen Dynasty kings. When the palace was restored, the throne was moved to be kept and preserved at the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum.
