According to BGR , the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 gaming console promises to bring many improvements when it launches this June. One of the mysteries recently revealed is the function of the new 'C' button - used to access the GameChat feature. However, before users can get excited about the experience, an update to Nintendo's privacy policy has raised privacy concerns.
Nintendo Switch 2's C button can record audio and video of users
As spotted by GoNintendo this week, Nintendo has tweaked its privacy policy, and the changes mainly revolve around the collection of user data when using GameChat. Specifically, Nintendo states: "With your consent and to enforce our terms, we may also monitor and record your video and audio interactions with other users."
The company also added: "When you use any of our services that include these or similar capabilities, we may collect your content in accordance with these terms of use and policies."

While collecting audio and video interaction data is not uncommon among online services with similar features, it is still important information for any prospective Nintendo Switch 2 owner to be aware of. It is essential to understand what you are agreeing to before pressing the 'C' button and activating GameChat.
Nintendo also clarified the roadmap for GameChat, stating that all Nintendo Switch 2 users will be able to use the feature for free upon launch. However, starting on March 31, 2026, GameChat will require users to have an active Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) membership.
It’s worth noting that even if users pay for the NSO package, there doesn’t appear to be an option to opt out of Nintendo’s collection of audio and video data when GameChat is used. This raises questions about the balance between connectivity and personal privacy on the new console, and users will need to think carefully before deciding to make extensive use of this communication feature.
