The new change would apply across the entire Canada-US border and allow both countries to refuse asylum seekers at unofficial ports of entry.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government has reached a long-discussed deal with the United States on illegal immigration that would allow Canada to close the illegal Roxham Road crossing at their shared border.
Additionally, Canada will open its doors to 15,000 migrants from the Western Hemisphere who apply to legally enter the country.
The agreement comes in the form of changes to the way the “Safe Third Country Agreement” between Canada and the United States applies.
This would close a loophole in the agreement that came into effect in 2004 and currently prevents Canadian law enforcement from turning back asylum seekers who enter the country at locations other than official ports of entry on the shared border.
The change would apply across the entire Canada-US border and allow both countries to refuse asylum seekers at unofficial ports of entry.
Progress on negotiations for a new border deal between the two countries has accelerated ahead of US President Joe Biden's first official visit to Canada.
The agreement will take effect immediately after being announced because the changes do not need to be approved by the US Congress, but can be passed by executive order.
