HNN.VN - On May 10, the Hue Project - Plastic-reducing urban area in Central Vietnam (TVA Project) in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and the People's Committee of Thuy Thanh Commune (Huong Thuy Town) organized the launch of the Thanh Toan tile-roofed bridge plastic-reducing tourist destination.

Thanh Toan tiled bridge - a typical community tourism destination, is a place to preserve the soul of Vietnamese countryside through a hundred-year-old tiled wooden bridge, a lively farm tool exhibition house and a rustic rural market. Choosing Thanh Toan tiled bridge as a model for plastic reduction has symbolic meaning, contributing to preserving cultural heritage and protecting the environment.

With the support of the Department of Tourism, TVA Project and local authorities, 5 community tourism establishments have been certified by TVA Project and supported to pilot the plastic reduction model. These establishments have committed to implementing solutions such as: Replacing single-use plastic bottles with personal water bottles, encouraging tourists to refill water, limiting plastic bags and replacing single-use plastic items with environmentally friendly materials.

The list of pioneering establishments includes: Thanh Toan Farm Tools Exhibition House; Van The Garden experience point; Van Thanh Garden experience point; Nguyen Thi Kiem conical hat establishment and Xuka Homestay Truong Thi Phuong.

To support the transition, the TVA Project has provided initial plastic reduction equipment such as water filters for visitors to refill their water at the tap, glass water bottles, glass cups, ceramic shampoo and shower gel bottles. In addition, a system of waste sorting bins, identification and communication boards at the destination have also been installed to raise awareness and guide visitors to dispose of waste properly.

For businesses that have not yet participated or have not fully met the criteria of the plastic reduction model, the positive results and clear benefits from the plastic reduction activities of the pioneering units will create an important foundation for Thuy Thanh commune to continue to mobilize and encourage the community to join hands to perfect and replicate the model. This will be the first step towards building Thanh Toan tile bridge into a comprehensive plastic reduction community tourism destination, environmentally friendly and sustainable development.

At the launching ceremony, the leaders of Thuy Thanh Commune People's Committee and 5 business establishments committed to practicing and maintaining plastic reduction activities at their units as well as encouraging people and tourists to join in practicing plastic reduction. The Department of Tourism and Thuy Thanh Commune People's Committee affirmed to accompany the 5 pioneering community tourism establishments in reducing plastic to continue maintaining green services, not only attracting tourists by unique cultural values, but also by their sense of responsibility to the environment and orientation towards sustainable development.

Also on this occasion, Hue College of Tourism coordinated with travel agencies to implement tour programs to reduce plastic waste at Thanh Toan tile-roofed bridge tourist site.

The TVA project was developed with funding from WWF-Norway (through WWF-Vietnam) and received by the Hue City People's Committee with the aim of supporting the city in protecting rivers and wetland and coastal ecosystems from plastic waste pollution. The project will be implemented over 5 years, from 2021-2025 and divided into 2 phases.
