Long Thanh International Airport takes off with the Southeast

In recent years, the Southeast has emerged as the most dynamic economic region in the country. The Southeast region has 6 provinces and cities; in which, there are localities with strong industrial development, such as Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces. Currently, the Southeast region has 86 industrial parks in operation providing goods for export. At the same time, this is also a region with strong tourism development, with many attractive tourist destinations, such as Vung Tau, Ba Den Mountain, Cat Tien National Park, etc.

The Southeast is currently the region attracting the largest FDI in the country, accounting for 41.1% of the total FDI capital nationwide, mainly invested in the industrial sector, helping the Southeast become a major industrial and export center of Vietnam. In particular, Ho Chi Minh City has about 115 countries and territories investing in nearly 11,000 projects, with a total capital of over 78 billion USD; followed by Binh Duong province, with 40 billion USD; Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Tay Ninh, Binh Phuoc provinces are also key localities in industry and attracting FDI capital.

To create a breakthrough in connecting the Southeast region with the whole country and internationally, on June 14, 2011, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 909/QD-TTg approving the planning of the Long Thanh airport project, located in 6 communes of Long Thanh district, Dong Nai province. On June 25, 2015, the National Assembly passed Resolution No. 94/2015/QH13 on the investment policy of the Long Thanh airport project. On November 26, 2019, the 14th National Assembly passed Resolution No. 95/2019/QH14 on the feasibility study report of the Long Thanh Airport Construction Project, Phase 1. On November 11, 2020, the Prime Minister signed Decision No. 1777/QD-TTg approving the Long Thanh International Airport Construction Investment Project, Phase 1. On January 5, 2021, the Long Thanh Airport Construction Investment Project, Phase 1, officially started construction, with a total investment of over 16 billion USD, invested by Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV).

The Long Thanh International Airport construction investment project is an important national project, a special-level project, of great significance to the development of the aviation industry in particular, the socio-economic development of the Southern key economic region and the whole country in general. has a strategic position in terms of security and defense.

According to the master plan, Long Thanh International Airport Project has an area of 5,000 hectares. Including 4 runways; 4 passenger terminals and auxiliary items, capacity of 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo per year. Long Thanh Airport is built according to the 4F airport standards (the highest level) according to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This is the largest infrastructure investment project in Vietnam to date.

Long Thanh International Airport is invested with modern equipment, advanced aviation technology, capable of receiving the largest civil aircraft. The synchronous traffic connection system, when put into operation, will create favorable conditions for the development of domestic and international routes, creating a development foundation for the Southern key economic region, promoting connections with the ASEAN market, the Asian region and the world. From Long Thanh Airport, it only takes 3 hours to fly to all Southeast Asian and Asian countries, connecting China, Korea, and Japan. Therefore, in the development plan, after 2030, Long Thanh Airport will become a transit airport in Southeast Asia and Asia.

Construction of Long Thanh International Airport Project.

Mr. Lai Xuan Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), said: The Long Thanh airport construction investment project is divided into 3 phases, expected to be completed in 2035. In early 2021, the project officially started construction. Over the past 2 years, the site clearance work has been vigorously implemented. On August 25, 2023, Dong Nai province handed over the entire 5,000 ha site to serve the Long Thanh airport construction project phase 1. On August 31, the investor officially started construction of the Long Thanh airport passenger terminal.

Phase 1 will invest in building runway No. 1, 4,000 m long, 75 m wide, parallel taxiways, connecting taxiways; 1 passenger terminal with a capacity of 25 million passengers per year, floor area of 275,000 m2, 123 m high air traffic control tower and auxiliary items for long-term development, parking lot with a capacity of 4,200 cars, cargo terminals with a capacity of 1.2 million tons per year; fuel supply station, wastewater treatment; construction of spaces serving customs, border police, local police, medical quarantine, airport authorities, port management and exploitation units, flight operations, airlines, service providers, serving 40,000 meals per day...

In particular, the passenger terminal - the highlight of Long Thanh International Airport - is designed delicately, aesthetically, imbued with Vietnamese culture and environmentally friendly. The check-in hall is equipped with devices to support passengers in self-check-in, self-check-in baggage, applying facial recognition technology, biometric technology, electronic passports to bring convenience to passengers; security check area, customs, modern screening equipment; immigration area with automatic security monitoring.

Phase 1, when completed, will be connected to the main traffic system, such as Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway; Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, connecting to the Mekong Delta region; Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway, Dau Giay - Phan Thiet Expressway connecting to the South Central region, Ring Road 4 connecting to Lam Dong province; connecting to the North - South high-speed railway and a railway line in the region...

After completion, Long Thanh International Airport will not only play an important role in the field of transportation, but also contribute significantly to attracting investors to the Southeast region and the Southern key economic region; be the gateway to welcome international tourists to Vietnam and Vietnamese tourists to international. At the same time, it will open up opportunities to compete with airports in the region, making Vietnam an attractive destination on the international aviation map; contribute to making Vietnam a major transportation center in the region and the world, creating new growth momentum and international integration.
