The older you get, the more you should surf the internet to prevent dementia.

No joke: The older you get, the more you should use smartphones and surf the internet, because it can help reduce the risk of dementia by up to 58%!

According to Science Alert , researchers analyzed data from 57 previous studies, including more than 411,000 people over the age of 50, to examine the link between technology use habits and dementia.

Using technology to reduce the risk of dementia

“You see people talking about how technology is harming us every day,” said psychologist Michael Scullin from Baylor University (USA).

People often use phrases like “brain degeneration” or “brain rot,” and now “digital dementia” is becoming the new buzzword. Researchers want to know if this is true.

According to the analysis, technology use was associated with a 58% lower risk of cognitive decline. Additionally, technology users showed a 26–34% lower rate of cognitive decline over time.

Each study used a different approach and measured technology use. Some studies looked at smartphone use, while others measured social media use.

However, the risk reduction persisted even after adjusting for factors such as occupation, education level and socioeconomic status.

Older adults need to increase connectivity

“Encouraging older adults to use technology, especially to help them challenge themselves, connect with others, and compensate for cognitive problems, may be an approach to promoting brain health,” says neuropsychologist Jared Benge from the University of Texas.

Researchers suggest that using technology helps protect the brain from cognitive decline and dementia in several ways, such as stimulating the brain, especially when learning to use new devices and apps.

Technology can also help us stay connected, through social media and video calls. Loneliness is linked to a higher risk of dementia. Conversely, maintaining social relationships helps keep the brain active.

Technology also plays a supporting role as mental capacity declines, helping older adults remain independent for longer periods of time, such as medication reminders and health appointment scheduling apps.

"Your parents or grandparents can learn how to use photo, messaging or calendar apps on their smartphones. Be patient while they learn," says Scullin.

The study was published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour .
