On October 27, Tan Vu Port Branch ( Hai Phong Port) welcomed the first ship running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) of the CMA-CGM shipping line to dock at the port to load cargo. The CMA CGM VISBY ship has a capacity of 31,016 DWT, a length of 204.26m. The ship imported 822 containers (equivalent to 1447 teus), exported 930 containers (equivalent to 1700 teus). The total import and export reached 1752 containers (equivalent to 3147 teus).

This landmark milestone reinforces Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company’s efforts in developing smart green ports to build a green, sustainable economy , welcoming more green ships as the industry moves towards decarbonization.

Nowadays, shipping lines tend to put into operation ships running on green fuel, cutting down on old ships running on conventional fuel for the purpose of protecting the environment. These green technologies have significantly reduced harmful emissions, pollution and increased fuel efficiency when compared to container ships running on traditional engines. Although operating LNG ships will have higher costs than ships running on conventional fuel; the berth to receive LNG ships must be equipped with high safety infrastructure and specialized systems such as insulated pipes, safety connection devices, and emergency safety systems.

LNG vessels arriving at port typically require longer periods of time to complete safety procedures before unloading, particularly the cooling of pipelines and equipment for handling LNG. Handling LNG requires more stringent safety and security measures than diesel, such as maintaining safe distances and deploying additional security personnel.

CMA CGM is actively contributing to a more sustainable future by implementing innovative technologies and promoting long-term environmental solutions, in addition to ensuring a safe and secure journey between Tan Vu Port (Hai Phong Port) and Singapore, meeting the expectations of partners and customers.

Representatives of Tan Vu Port (Hai Phong Port) presented flowers to congratulate the Captain of the CMA CGM VISBY ship.

Before the ship docked, the forces in the ship operation chain of Hai Phong Port and CMA CGM shipping company had a meeting on the operation. The two sides discussed and agreed on the effective ship operation method, ensuring loading and unloading productivity and safety conditions.

Hai Phong Port and CMA CGM have researched and decided to put into operation this carbon-reducing LNG service route, once again affirming the comprehensive cooperation between the two sides and the important role of Tan Vu Port in the fleet development strategy of CMA CGM.

In line with the trend of green port development, Hai Phong Port is one of the pioneering seaports making efforts to increase competitiveness, respond to the "green transformation" process, contribute to limiting emissions and protecting the environment.
