According to the Immigration Department, Ministry of Public Security, the issuance and renewal of passports has been implemented completely online.

The entire process, from submitting documents, paying fees and receiving results, can all be done online, so people do not need to go directly to the authorities to complete procedures as before.

Specifically, people can proactively log in from a computer with an Internet connection to the National Public Service Portal (at dichvucong.gov.vn) to find information and follow the steps to make a passport.

The final step is for people to register to receive a chip-embedded passport via post . Registering for a passport online and receiving it via postal delivery ensures convenience, saves time and money, and avoids fraudulent situations of impersonating passport assistance.

Get passport by mail

According to Vietnam Post, the process of delivering chip-embedded passports is currently being carried out in accordance with the regulations that Vietnam Post has committed to with the Immigration Department, Ministry of Public Security.

Electronic passports - things to know

Since March 1, the Immigration Department, Ministry of Public Security has issued ordinary passports with electronic chips to Vietnamese citizens.

Electronic chip passports have many outstanding advantages, helping to carry out exit and entry procedures in countries more quickly and easily.

A passport with an electronic chip is a passport with an electronic device that stores encrypted information of the passport holder and the signature of the issuer. This is a new innovation to facilitate Vietnamese citizens, improve the effectiveness of State management of entry and exit, and meet the country's international integration requirements.

In addition, the chip also stores biometric characteristics, photos and personal information of citizens on the passport. This helps to simplify the paperwork process, making database management easier for both competent authorities and citizens in need.

Compared to the ordinary passport without a chip (issued from July 1, 2022), the chip-embedded passport is similar in size, color and number of pages: It has a dark blue cover; the inside pages are printed with beautiful landscapes of the country and Vietnamese cultural heritage. Modern technology, meeting security requirements, preventing the risk of counterfeiting and meeting ICAO standards.

Regarding the differences, the first cover page of the passport with electronic chip has an electronic chip symbol to distinguish it from the old model.

The electronic chip is placed on the back cover of the passport (in the lower left corner, the chip is difficult to detect with the naked eye) to store personal information and biometric information of the passport holder (including facial photo, fingerprints...) and the digital signature of the passport issuing authority.

On the personal information page of the chip-embedded passport, authorities have added information about the citizen's place of birth.

According to the police agency, ordinary passports without electronic chips and ordinary passports with electronic chips can be used simultaneously. Citizens who have been issued ordinary passports without electronic chips will continue to use them until the passport expires, and are not required to change to passports with electronic chips.

When submitting an application for a passport, Vietnamese citizens aged 14 years or older have the right to choose to be issued a passport without an electronic chip or a passport with an electronic chip.
